Wellington in Party Mode for Cuba Street Carnival

Travel News Asia Thursday, 15 February 2007

Wellington, New Zealand, is a city that knows how to party. And from February 23-24 it will show just how, with New Zealand’s largest free street party, the biennial Cuba Street Carnival.

For two days the heart of the city will be transformed into a kaleidoscope of colour and entertainment with live music, dance, street markets, roving entertainers, international buskers, outdoor films, fairground attractions and the Carnival’s signature highlight – the Illuminated Night Parade.

“As New Zealand’s food, wine and culture capital, Wellington continues to emerge as a vibrant new holiday destination for visitors from Australia,” said Sarah Peacock, Australia Marketing Manager for Positively Wellington Tourism.

“Wellington has a strong events programme and vibrant nightlife. Events like the Cuba Street Carnival add depth to our offer and provide visitors with a great opportunity to enjoy Wellington with the Wellingtonians” Ms Peacock added.

The Cuba Street Carnival begins at midday on Friday 23 February with market stalls, international street performers and an evening outdoor screening of the classic and hilarious rockumentary ‘This Is Spinal Tap’.

On Saturday, music takes centre stage. A wide range of performances take place on 10 live stages throughout the city’s Cuba Street and Courtenay Place, creating New Zealand’s largest free music festival. There will also be entertainers and street performers throughout the city, a range of unique market stalls offering high quality New Zealand-designed clothing, jewellery, Pacific handicrafts and a vast variety of international cuisine.

The Cuba Street Carnival concludes with a bang on Saturday night with the award-winning Illuminated Night Parade, which features floats, music, dancers, performers, strange sights and impromptu events.
