Fun Activities planned for 12th Emirates Singapore Derby

Travel News Asia Tuesday, 10 July 2007

This July, fundraising takes centre-stage at the 12th Emirates Singapore Derby alongside thrilling racetrack action, with title sponsor Emirates aiming to raise a record sum for charity.

Themed Emirates Singapore Derby: 12 Years On! - Celebrating the Art of Racing, this year's Derby aims to raise at least Sin$120,000 for 12 charities under the Community Chest of Singapore.

Stephen Chu, Emirates' Area Manager for Singapore and Brunei, said, "While we celebrate the running of the 12th Emirates Singapore Derby, we want to do our part for charity. This is the fifth year that we have incorporated a fundraising element into the Derby and we are extremely grateful for the overwhelming support our guests and donors have shown us over the past years."

One key fundraising initiative is the silent auction of an exclusive art piece created by renowned Singaporean artist Francis Kwok Peng Kin. Playing on the theme of this year's Derby, the painting, which depicts 12 horses galloping through the rivers, is the artist's fourth fundraising collaboration with Emirates for the Derby.

In addition to the thrills of the race, guests can look forward to an exciting afternoon on Race Day, as Emirates brings back classic activities associated with the Derby.

The 'Pick and Win' contests, where guests can predict the winning horses for each race on Derby Day, are certain to be a big hit. A Grand Draw comprising two Business Class return tickets to Dubai (courtesy of Emirates) and a three-night stay at the Raffles Dubai (courtesy of Raffles Hotel & Resorts) awaits guests who accurately predict the winning horses for the Emirates Singapore Derby race.

The ever-popular 'Best Dressed for the Races' contest will return once again, with Business Class tickets to be won by three lucky winners judged to be the best dressed for the event. This year's judges include Mrs Jessie Phua, Nominated Member of Parliament; Mr Ian Grundy, Head of Marketing, XL Group and Ms Audrey Quek, Principal Image Consultant, Audrey Quek Image Consultancy.

Such exciting activities will not just be limited to Derby Day alone. Emirates has also come up with several initiatives to drum up the Derby buzz in the lead-up to Race Day.

Melbourne-based milliner Shai Tabassi will be bringing a selection of one-of-a-kind hats to Singapore, giving race-goers an opportunity to dress to impress on Race Day. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of hats will be donated to charity. Ms Tabassi will be having an exclusive showcase of her collection at the Carlton Hotel on July 13 and 14, from 2pm to 5pm.

In addition, the public can also participate in the "Guess the Emirates Singapore Derby Winner" SMS contest from July 13 to 15. Participants can send in their entries via SMS to the hotline 73111 in the following format: Your Winning Horse Number<space>NRIC<space>Your name (Example: 1 S1234567Z John Tan) to stand a chance to win one pair of Economy Class tickets to Dubai, courtesy of Emirates, with three nights' accommodation, courtesy of Emirates Holidays, and Sin$1,000 cash, courtesy of Singapore Turf Club.
