Hosts of the 17th annual Hotel Investment Conference Asia Pacific (HICAP) have
confirmed that Kurt J. Wachtveitel, general manager of The Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, will receive the HICAP Lifetime Achievement Award at the event, scheduled for 11-13 October 2006 at the
InterContinental Hong Kong.
Wachtveitl has been general manager of The Oriental, Bangkok for 39 years. He is a graduate of the Lausanne Hotel School in Switzerland and
studied philosophy at the University of Madrid. Wachtveitl’s desire to assist young Thai citizens in the hotel industry resulted in the launch of The
Oriental Hotel Apprenticeship Programme (OHAP) in October 1990.
“This year the HICAP Awards committee felt it was time to honor someone who exemplifies the true spirit of hospitality in their untiring daily
organization and delivery of world-class service and an unforgettable guest experience” explained HICAP Co-Chairman, Robert Hecker of Horwath
Asia Pacific. “Kurt’s commitment to such spirit is clearly evident to anyone who has stayed at The Oriental Bangkok.”
The HICAP Lifetime Achievement Award is presented to an outstanding leader in the hospitality industry for his or her accomplishments and
contributions to expanding, enhancing and advancing the hotel industry. Potential recipients are nominated and voted on each year by a special
committee comprised of senior level industry participants. Past winners include Paul Dubrule of Accor and PRS Oberoi of The Oberoi Group.
