The Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre kicked off its first green campaign called 3R (Reduce, Re-use and Recycle) recently in its goal to increase
awareness among staff and visitors alike on environmental protection and sustainability to achieve the Green Globe 21 Standard.
Green Globe 21 is the global Benchmarking, Certification and improvement system for sustainable Travel & Tourism, based on Agenda 21 and
principles of sustainable development endorsed by 182 Heads of State at the United Nations Rio de Janeiro Earth Summit. It provides companies,
communities and consumers with a path to sustainable travel and tourism.
To encourage staff and visitors to the
centre to reduce wastage, re-use and recycle where possible brightly coloured bins are placed strategically
around the centre. During the first major event since the launch of the 3R campaign (PIKOM’s PC Fair, attended by over 180,000 people), the
response towards the recycling campaign was extremely encouraging as the public were segregating the rubbish well into the different bins – a
new concept for many in Malaysia.
Director of Facilities, Geoff Hayward,
said that, “In addition to waste management, measures are also in place to improve energy savings by fine
tuning the current systems such as lighting control to better match the building’s operations. The building’s design itself makes the most of natural
light in all pre-function areas, reducing the artificial lighting demands.
With the current initiatives in place, the next step will be to keep the momentum going and constantly look for new ways to reduce waste as well as
streamlining the processes to use less and promote energy savings through technology and new product innovations.”
