In August 2006, Singapore welcomed 870,000 visitors, registering a 7.2% growth over the same period a year ago. This is a record high for August. Visitor days were estimated to reach 2.9 million, an increase of
4.8% in comparison to August 2005.
Indonesia (164,000), P.R. China (103,000), Japan (63,000) Australia
(55,000), and Malaysia (51,000) were Singapore’s top five visitor-generating
markets in August 2006. These markets accounted for 50% of total visitor arrivals for the month.
Visitor arrivals from Indonesia showed a growth of
22% in August 2006
compared to August 2006 – this is the strongest monthly growth to date
in 2006. The good growth can be attributed to higher spending power due to the recovery of the Rupiah against the Singapore dollar since
July; two public holidays in August; and marketing promotions in Indonesia.
In August 2006, Singapore gazetted hotels recorded
Sin$121.4 million in room revenue, an increase of 22.2% over August 2005.
The Average Room Rate (ARR) in August 2006 was estimated at
Sin$152, an increase of 14.9% over August 2005. The Average Occupancy Rate
(AOR) for hotels was estimated to have reached 87% in August 2006, a 1.9 percentage point increase over August 2005.
