KLM Royal Dutch Airlines has launched an
auction via the www.pioneersinaviation.nl website. Visitors to the auction can
make an offer on a limited number of scale models of the famous Dakota DC3. The model aircraft boasts a wingspan of roughly one meter,
and features propeller-driven engines and battery operated navigation lights. The money raised by the auction will be donated to
AirCares, the airline’s charity program. AirCares supports disadvantaged children throughout the world and the funds all go to the
respective charities.
The auction for the first model aircraft runs until December 2, 2006. The minimum offer amounts to EUR 850 and,
given the complexity of distribution, participation is restricted to people living in the Netherlands, France and Belgium. Bidders receive
e-mail confirmation. Each time a bid is exceeded, the previous bidder is notified of such by e-mail. This makes it possible for the
individuals concerned to stay in the bidding. If he or she no longer wishes to participate in the auction, the last bid stands and appears as
such on the website.
The scale models were produced specifically for KLM’s commemoration of its first scheduled service operated with the Dakota DC3
exactly 70 years ago this month. In so doing, KLM became the first non-American to deploy this famous aircraft. No less than 13,000
Dakota DC3s were sold worldwide, making it the most successful aircraft in the history of commercial aviation.
