The hybrid Dendrobium Marina Mandarin has become the first Singapore-bred orchid named after a hotel in Singapore.
A cross between Dendrobium.Brandi and Dendrobium.Millennium Jade, this exotic orchid exudes a beautiful symphony of rich yellow and
burgundy hues on its petals.
In adopting the Dendrobium Marina Mandarin, Mr Tony
Cousens, General
Manager of the Marina Mandarin pointed out that the colourful orchid has been used in a variety of ways, since
the completion of the hotel’s $25 million renovation.
“It has been incorporated into Marina Mandarin’s décor, interior furnishing, collaterals
and even the naming of our function rooms. The hotel also has plans on product extension into gifts and souvenirs, and eventually as
menu items in our restaurants,” Tony said.
Already on the menu of Atrium Lounge is a series of innovative concoctions such as the Orchidia Sunset, an intoxicating mix of light rum,
Crème de Cassis and the juices of lime, passion fruit and orange. The non-alcoholic version, Orchidia Sunrise, is a refreshing combination
of Grenadine syrup and the juices of lime, passion fruit and orange. Not to be missed also is the down-to-earth Orchid Oolong Tea.
The orchid is the national flower of Singapore and natural to the tropics. With this adoption through elements of art, aesthetics, culinary
and fashion, Marina Mandarin hopes to embrace the best of Asia that transcends down to its mission of providing Asian grace, warmth
and care.
The hybridizer/originator of the Dendrobium Marina Mandarin is Mr. Syed Yusof Alsagoff, a well-known Singapore orchid breeder who
started orchid breeding since the 1960s. His hybrids – accounting for 200 registrations – have contributed greatly to the growth of the
local cut-flower orchid industry.
In recognition of his significant contribution to the orchid world, he received the Eric Holttum Gold Medal in 1977. In 2002, he was made a
Fellow of OSSEA at the 17th World Orchid Conference in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia.
