The discreet clink of fine china can now be heard on selected Emirates flights following the introduction of English afternoon tea.
Passengers in First and Business Class are served from trolleys laden with sandwiches, pastries, warmed scones, pats of golden butter,
strawberry jam, clotted cream, traditional English cakes and, of course, tea with either milk or a slice of lemon. Passengers in Economy,
too, enjoy their traditional afternoon tea treats.
Emirates has ensured that its mid-afternoon meal is completely authentic. Thinly-cut sandwiches and pastries are displayed on cake
stands reminiscent of tea at the Ritz. Cakes such as lemon sponge and Dundee cake (a rich fruit cake topped with almonds) are baked to
a traditional recipe.
Genuine Devonshire clotted cream, the name alone conjuring images of honeysuckle and high summer, is specially flown to Dubai and
served chilled as the perfect topping for buttered scones and strawberry jam.
Afternoon tea is available initially on selected flights to the UK (EK005 to London Heathrow, EK009 to and EK012 from London Gatwick
and EK037 to Birmingham) which depart Dubai in the afternoon but may be extended to other flights later.
Bob Ferguson, Vice President Aircraft Catering,
said, “We are confident that our afternoon tea gives passengers a special treat by
ensuring that they are served traditional English afternoon tea perfectly prepared and presented.”
