Finnair
has defined its new operational safety policy. At the same time, roles and responsibilities relating to operational safety and accountability towards the Finnish
aviation authority were reorganised. With these measures Finnair wants to uphold and improve its existing good level of safety.
The new operational safety procedure came into effect at the start of the year. The policy states that safety takes priority as a decision making factor. It also defines the
way in which the policy is implemented in practice.
The document introduces a newly defined concept, operational safety. The definition takes into account that an airline's operative safety as a whole is much wider than
just flight safety. It covers, in addition to flight safety, all flight operations -related ground and maintenance functions as well as their support functions.
"Operational safety is the responsibility of every Finnair and Finnair subcontractor's employee. Safety at Finnair is a built-in way of working which is supported by our
corporate culture," emphasized Finnair's President and CEO as of 1 January Jukka
Hienonen.
The position of Finnair's Accountable Manager has also been redefined. The Accountable Manager is responsible for the Airline Operator's Certificate and other
operating licences granted by the authorities. Starting 1 January 2006, Finnair's Accountable Manager is EVP Scheduled Passenger Traffic, Deputy CEO Henrik
Arle.
At the same time, the company's aviation safety and quality departments were moved under the Accountable Manager.
