Starwood to manage New Hotel in China's Shanxi Province

Travel News Asia 10 March 2006

Starwood Hotels & Resorts Worldwide and Shanxi Anye Group have reached an agreement whereby Starwood will manage the Sheraton Taiyuan Hotel in the Shanxi province of China. The newly built 400-room Sheraton Taiyuan Hotel is scheduled to open in January 2009.

“The signing of this hotel marks the entry of Starwood into Shanxi province, one of the birthplaces of Chinese civilization and long known as one of the key trade and banking areas of China. Taiyuan, as the capital of Shanxi province, has always been the key recipient of foreign investment into the province, accounting for over 50% of the total investments made in Shanxi. This, coupled with the fact that there are currently no international branded or high end hotels available in Taiyuan, further signifies the strong demand for hotel rooms there,” commented Miguel Ko, President of Starwood Hotels & Resorts, Asia Pacific.

Taiyuan has a history of 2,500 years and is located in the central Shanxi plain, in the middle belt of tourist routes in Shanxi, and is itself rich in ecological tourist resources as well as historic and cultural relics. In addition, due to its rich mineral resources and agricultural produce, Taiyuan is also a center for industry and trade, its core industrial activities being power, metallurgy and machinery. Taiyuan is approximately one and a half hours flight from Beijing, one and a half hours from Shanghai and two and a half hours from Guangzhou.

Sheraton Taiyuan Hotel will be located in the western district of Taiyuan, a district considered to be the “newer” part of Taiyuan city, as it is less dense in terms of developments. The hotel is located next to the Fen River Scenic Zone, which is the only green belt in Taiyuan, providing much needed respite from the town’s prevailing urban and industrial landscape. In addition to 400 guest rooms, the hotel will also feature four food and beverage outlets, over 12,000 square feet of meeting space, a health club and spa as well as an indoor swimming pool.
