Tiger Airways,
a Singapore based low cost airline, has applied for landing rights to fly into Clarke Field, Manila in the Philippines.
“Gaining the landing rights to Clarke Field fits perfectly with our business model of flying to secondary airports which are cheaper to operate. We can then pass the
savings to our passengers through really low fares,” said Tony Davis, CEO of Tiger Airways.
Clark Field is a former U.S. military air base in central Luzon, Philippines. It
covers an area of about 30 square km and is located 77 km north of Manila near the
foothills of the Cabusilan Mountains. The area is popular with visitors for its proximity to the volcanic mountains of Pinatubo and Arayat.
The base - which is roughly as big as Singapore – has been turned into a special economic zone (SEZ) with incentives for companies setting up business there. The
scheme has been a qualified success, with 156 national and international companies taking up the offer. Plans to open a new secondary airport capable of handling
international flights have enabled the area to attract more tourists and leisure travellers.
The airline said it hopes to be able to commence flights to the base
before Easter.
