JIA
Boutique Hotel has opened Y’s, one of two brand new food and beverage concepts to open at the Philippe Starck-designed boutique hotel in Hong Kong. The new
Asian Bistro in the heart of Causeway Bay offers a hip, contemporary interior in which to enjoy innovative dining. Y’s will be followed next month by the opening of the
hotel’s chic signature restaurant and lounge, OPIA.
Y’s menu features Asian and Mediterranean home-style dishes created with Asian contemporary flair and using only the freshest of ingredients. The menu is
conceptualised and developed by award-winning Melbourne-based chef Teague Ezard of ezard at adelphi. JIA’s executive chef Dane Clouston and sous chef Matthew
Lawdorn prepare the dishes fresh in the large open kitchen.
Named after the hotel’s
owner, Ms Yenn Wong, Y’s interior of mint green and earth tones is as fresh on the eye as its dishes are on the palate. The cosy
contemporary interior features cool grey wall-mounted lettering that spells out in word form some of the large open kitchen’s concepts and the ingredients used – words
such as ‘vibrant’, ‘organic’, ‘spice’, ‘turmeric’ and ‘coriander’.
Designed by one of Hong Kong’s most innovative young interior architects, André Fu of Hong Kong and London-based architectural firm AFSO, Y’s interior is a
21st-century take on 1960s Hong Kong cafés.
The 1,800 square-feet of vibrant casual space features bold highlights, such as its green window treatment and custom-built tan leather chairs. An open kitchen displays
true culinary preparation, rather than being a cosmetic showpiece. And with steamed and fried dishes featuring prominently on the menu, there is plenty of action to
behold.
Accessed from an independent door adjacent to one of JIA boutique hotel’s entrances (located at 10-12 Pennington Street), Y’s small inner lobby with Bordello-style
curvy glass doors opens onto an open-plan seating area.
Y’s bar is another area of visual interest. Its open counter is topped with a row of tan and orange disc-like light-fittings, each washed with light courtesy of a silver radium
bulb at its centre.
Wall coverings are tactile, incorporating faux snakeskin, warm-hued wood cladding and a subtle Chinese peony metallic wallpaper. Taupe-coloured and glass tabletops
are pepped up with custom-made tan leather and stainless steel dining chairs. Tables for two, booths for four and long communal dining tables are available. Above the
two long tables hang naked light bulbs, inspired by the simple fittings of Hong Kong’s once ubiquitous street-side eateries.
Y’s is open daily from 12 noon to 11 pm, serving lunch, afternoon tea and dinner. Reservations are not accepted.
