Lufthansa's
new seats in its Business and Economy Classes are expected to provide a considerable improvement in seating comfort on
flights within Germany and Europe as of next spring. The unoccupied middle seat in
Business Class provides more personal freedom of movement, more privacy for confidential paperwork or undisturbed
reading, more room to relax and more storage capacity. The passengers will be offered a new cabin with a contemporary design. Leather seats will still be standard not
only in the Business Class, but also in the Economy Class.
“Lufthansa stands for quality and reliability, an extensive route network and value for money in all classes”, says Thierry Antinori, Executive Vice President Marketing &
Sales of Lufthansa German Airlines. “The quality offensive launched last year offers our customers on Lufthansa flights within Germany and Europe even more comfort
and better connections. With the new seats in our continental fleet we are making further developments in the interests of our customers.”
By
October 2005, all 140 aircraft in the the airline's European fleet will be equipped with the new cabin.
The new seats in the Business Class offer a comfortable seat breadth of 48
cm and 44cm in Economy Class. The centre console providing additional storage space in the
vacant middle seat is new in the Business Class. Furthermore, new coat hooks on the side of the seat in front will allow jackets and overcoats to be hung
up even when the table is folded down.
These
improvements are
being made possible by the installation of the latest generation of seats from the manufacturers Recaro and B/E Aerospace. Thanks to a slimmer construction of the backrest they offer more space for the knees and make it easier to stretch the legs. Since the backs
involve no hard metal or carbon structures, they also adapt perfectly to the contour of the back and thus contribute to a particularly high standard of comfort.
The lower weight of the new seats
leads to a reduction in fuel consumption and thus also the pollutant emissions of the Lufthansa fleet. Calculated for the entire
European fleet, that means an annual reduction in fuel consumption of approximately five million
litres.
