School Children in Phuket Draw for the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation

Travel News Asia 27 September 2005

The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation (MKMTF) has launched a new series of ten postcards, featuring drawings of turtles by local school children from local Mai Khao village in Phuket.

In July this year, the Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation organized a drawing contest themed “Life of Marine Turtles”, aimed at creating environmental awareness among children in the Mai Khao beach area. Over forty students from Hong Yok and Mai Khao school participated in the competition. The Foundation sponsored the materials for the project and ten outstanding pictures were selected to be made into postcards.

JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa hosted the award presentation and lunch for the children whose art was selected for the postcards on 22 September. Prizes included a one thousand Thai baht scholarship, a meal voucher and a gift certificate from the resort’s Little Turtle Children’s Pavilion, a turtle T-shirt and a day trip in a canoe sponsored by John Gray’s Sea canoe. The prizes were awarded by Craig Smith, Resort General Manager and Chairman of the MKMTF, Dr. Robert Mather, WWF Thailand representative and local officials from Mai Khao village.

“I am so proud of my students. They are very happy that their pictures were selected and also very excited to know that ‘their’ postcards will be sent all around the world. I would like to thank the MKMTF and JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa for organizing such a great project”, said Tanit Aranyasit, Headmaster of Mai Khao School.

The Mai Khao Marine Turtle Foundation’s new postcards are available for purchase at Lotus Boutique and Siam Gallery at JW Marriott Phuket Resort & Spa. All proceeds from the postcard sales go to the Foundation.
