Malaysia
Airlines and AirAsia have, for the very first time synergized, to address low traffic demand during the Ramadan period.
Effective 1st October to 15th October,
MAS and AirAsia will jointly reduce its scheduled capacity in the domestic sector to avoid excess
capacity and wastage of resources during the period of low demand. The move
aims to provide better efficiencies and coordination between the two national
airlines to combat spiraling jet fuel prices (currently faced by all airlines in the world) while enabling MAS and AirAsia to achieve each other’s objectives.
“Malaysia Airlines welcomes cooperation with AirAsia. Both airlines have agreed to a joint effort to address the low demand during Ramadan period whilst conserving
fuel resources. Despite the limited cut back on both MAS and AirAsia domestic routes, we believe that the move will not materially affect the convenience of passengers
carried on both airlines.” said Tengku Azmil Zahruddin Raja Abdul Aziz, Executive Director, Malaysia Airlines
Tony
Fernandes, Group CEO, AirAsia added, “This is regarded as a historic day for our country’s aviation industry, and one of the happiest moments for AirAsia since our inception. We hope that this is a start for
greater cooperation which will mutually benefit MAS and AirAsia in reaching our respective objectives. We applaud PMB and MAS for taking the first step towards a
healthy and responsible cooperation to resolve excess capacity and unproductive competition during a period of exceptionally low traffic demand.”
