One
of the first dedicated Gold Coast whale watching tours will commence
June, in perfect time for the start of the annual migration of humpback whales from Antarctica
to the warmer waters of Queensland, Australia.
From 18 June until mid November, Gold Coast Whale Watching will offer two daily cruises from Southport, from 9am-12.30pm and from 2.00pm -5.30pm. All cruises will
be operated by the 40-passenger oceangoing catamaran, Mahi Mahi, which will offer unobstructed 360 degree viewing on three levels.
“Whale watching is enormously popular – but until now, there has never been a true Gold Coast-based operation offering these tours,” said Anthony Ardern, Managing
Director of the new company and marketing manager of its sister company, Brisbane’s Dolphin Wild.
“With the growth of eco-tourism, and the increasing attraction of whale watching, our cruises will add an exciting new touring option for visitors to the Gold Coast,” said
Mr Ardern.
Gold Coast Whale Watching
will operate from Surfers Paradise, behind the Concorde Hotel, commencing with a Broadwater Cruise before
heading off shore in search of migratory whales.
“Last week, while ferrying our newest vessel from Newcastle to Brisbane, we encountered the magnificent sight of two large pods of whales, swimming north near Port
Macquarie,” added Mr. Ardern.
“By the time we commence operations next month, there will be many more whales making the annual migration north – and we will be well-positioned to carry tourists
from the heart of the Gold Coast to observe this magnificent ritual of nature.”
Aboard each cruise by Gold Coast Whale Watching, one of the experienced crew will provide expert commentary. Passengers also will be offered tea, coffee, biscuits,
cakes and a fruit platter.
Tours will cost
A$85 per adult, A$75 for seniors and students, A$50 for children aged 4-14 years and
A$220 for families.
