Virgin Blue
today launched its brand new flights between Brisbane and Hamilton Island’s Great Barrier Reef Airport, marking the start of daily direct flights between the
two key destinations.
Virgin Blue Chief Executive, Brett Godfrey
said, “While it’s early days we are pleased our forward bookings for Hamilton Island flights are trending well and we believe it’s a reflection on
the popularity of the destination and the fact that people travelling to this region appreciate assigned leather seating, comfortable legroom and a range of optional extras
that gives choice back to the traveller.”
Regional operators, tourism representatives and travellers have warmly welcomed Virgin Blue’s arrival, along with Hamilton Island itself.
Hamilton Island’s Managing Director, Wayne Kirkpatrick, said, “We’re delighted that Virgin Blue has commenced services to Hamilton Island. Virgin Blue has become a
successful carrier with a strong following and its services will give visitors to Hamilton Island, other island resorts and the mainland at Airlie Beach, the choice of various
carriers. We’re confident that the Virgin Blue services will be well supported. It’s a very good airline.”
The direct service into Hamilton Island from Brisbane will offer convenient connections to and from Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra, Perth, Darwin and New Zealand. One
way fares from Brisbane start from A$129 on the Internet.
On
the new route, the airline will be able to uplift three tonnes of freight in
addition to a full passenger load. Flights into Hamilton Island are expected to bring in fresh produce for restaurants, flowers, mail, newspapers, medical supplies, band equipment, marine spare parts and
other goods.
