New world-class Golf resort opens in Australia

Travel News Asia 10 January 2005

Australia’s newest world-class resort course, The Cut at Port Bouvard near Mandurah south of Perth, opened for play early January after a 2-year development program under designer Jim Wilcher, principal of the Sydney-based consultancy Golf by Design (GBD) and for 10 years Greg Norman’s chief designer in Australasia.

The Cut features a $5 million world-class clubhouse that is due to open in March. Plans are also underway for the development of a resort hotel, apartments and villas adjoining the course. The Port Bouvard residential estate has 500 homes built over the past 6 years and another 400 lots will be sold over the next 2-3 years. Port Bouvard is the only residential resort development in Western Australia that has direct Indian Ocean and Peel Inlet estuary frontages, a state of the art marina and canals, as well as the 18-hole championship standard golf course.

“We have been overwhelmed by the interest and excitement which this course is generating throughout the golfing fraternity,” John Kelly, Director of The Cut, said. “People have recognised that not only is this a great course for golfers of any standard but that it has world-class facilities which will entice non-golfers as well.”

Over 200 people played the course on its opening day. They included leading WA-based international tour professionals Kim Felton and Jarrod Moseley who, after playing a charity skins event, rated The Cut better than most courses they have seen around the world.

Kim Felton, who came 15th in last years British Open and plays on the US and Asian Tours, believes that not only is the new course impressive in terms of its scenery but also challenging for golfers of any standard.

“The Cut is definitely one of the most scenic golf courses in Australia. Some of the views that you get on this course and the layout of the holes are right up there with the best in the world,” Kim Felton said.

“It is a real test for any golfer with the front nine being very playable, while the back nine becomes much harder. It is a great course set-up wise and would be perfect for a tournament. It would prove a real test for the professional players.”

Jarrod Moseley, 2002 Australian PGA Champion and 1999 Heineken Classic winner, believes The Cut will soon be ranked in the top two to three golf courses in Australia.

“The Cut will rate very well in relation to the other courses in Australasia. It will certainly be in the top two or three and may even push for number one. It is a quality golf course that is for sure,” said Jarrod Moseley, who currently plays on the European Tour.

“The views are just spectacular. That is what makes The Cut standout from any other course. It is breathtaking when you are on the back nine and look over the course and ocean.

“Off the short tees it will be very playable for golfers of all standards. If you played to your own strengths and the design of the course you could have a great deal of fun no matter what your handicap.”

The Cut Director John Kelly said: “Throughout my career I have played and worked on some of the best golf courses in the world. Our goal is to make The Cut one of the top 50 courses in the world. I am confident we can achieve this within a relatively short time.”

Course designer Jim Wilcher said: “With the course having such exposure to the Indian Ocean coastline I have sought to strategically use this to maximise the number of holes which have views of the water itself. Players will have an ocean view on as many as 14 of the 18 holes. I believe the course will soon rival any of the internationally acclaimed courses.”
