Steven Howard - Editor / Founder
Our editor (and founder), Steven Howard, worked for two of the
largest banks in the world before entering the travel industry in
Asia almost 30 years ago.
Steven was Publisher of ASIA Travel
Trade magazine, the oldest travel trade magazine in Asia, started
by a visioanary who understands luxury hotels and hospitality like
very few others, Adrian Zecha - the creative mind behind Aman
hotels and resorts, which is still today one of the most exclusive
luxury brands in the industry.
In the 1990s, Steven launched and developed
Frequent Traveller magazine into the leading corporate consumer travel
magazine in Asia, found on airplanes, newsstands across Asia,
airport lounges, hotels and more.
He has also worked as Group
Publisher of Panacea Publishing Asia, managing well known regional
travel magazines
such as Mix! - Asia's Creative Meetings Magazine, Business Traveller China and Business Traveller Asia
Pacific.
In addition, Steven is a professional photographer and videographer.
Not only has he conducted close to 1,000 exclusive video interviews
with Ministers of Tourism from different countries, CEOs, MDs,
EVPs, SVPs and VPs, as well as
other leading figures from within the travel and aviation
industries, but has had his photography published in magazines and
other media
around the world, even a movie!
He has a passion for travel, reading, cycling, swimming and sports
in general, as well as the immense benefits that sport tourism can
bring to a destination, both in the short and long term.
Being a firm believer that 5-star
does not always mean best, he loves to discover new places,
hotels, ideas and concepts, and to share those finds with readers.
Never one to shy away from getting his hands dirty, he is as
happy sat in the cold rain taking pictures of an event such as the
Hong Kong Sevens or
other pictures, as he is
sipping the finest wines, whiskies and Champagnes in the executive
floor of a true 5-star hotel.
Over the years (since the early 1990s), Steven has lived and worked in England, France,
Japan, Singapore, Hong Kong and Thailand, with most of his adult
life spent in South East Asia.
In May 2017,
Steven Howard lost his right eye in a freak accident in Thailand
that almost killed him. You can read more about that horrific
moment
here.
In 2019, the incident was featured in The Big Chilli, a popular
monthly magazine for expats produced in Bangkok by Colin Hastings.
That article, which has more pictures than the few on this page,
can be seen here:
How a Freak Accident Cost Photographer Steven Howard the Loss of
an Eye (opens in a new tab). Steven also published a video
about
living with one eye, six years on, that is meant to explain
his experience and help others.
Future Changes to ASIATravelTips.com /
TravelNewsAsia.com
It has certainly been challenging keeping abreast of all the tech changes related to websites
over the years, especially in the
mobile and social media side of the business. When ASIATravelTips.com was born,
tech solutions such as WordPress, Joomla, FB and Twitter did not exist. Our goal at the
beginning was to do the travel news alongside direct hotel reservations
as well as useful tips on the best bars, restaurants and
hotels etc from within Asia Pacific. We were amongst the first to
do that, and were very successful, producing 35 bookings a day for
one hotel at the prime. Now however, the direct hotel reservations
have been cut entirely, and we no longer update the 'tips' side of
the website as our main focus is on travel news - both industry
and consumer, but mainly travel industry - from airlines and
aviation in general, to GDS, travel trade solutions, hotels and
industry events.
