THAILAND A SHOPPING PARADISE AGAIN IN JUNE-JULY
Thailand’s bi-annual shopping extravaganza is set to kick-off again between June 1 and July 31 with another broad range of amazing shopping opportunities and world-class services at equally amazing prices.
The “Amazing Thailand Grand Sale Grand Service 2002” campaign was inaugurated today by Minister to the Prime Minister’s Office and Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) Chairman Mr. Somsak Thepsutin at Siam Discovery Centre in Bangkok.
TAT Acting Governor and Deputy Governor for Marketing Mrs. Juthamas Siriwan commented, “The two-month campaign is designed to help boost Thailand’s reputation as a world-class destination blessed with high quality products and services at affordable prices. We expect the two-month festival to generate over three billion baht in tourism revenue.”
Jointly organised by the TAT and Visa International, this year’s campaign will be the biggest ever with over 750 retail shops, department stores, hotels, restaurants, tourist attractions and theme parks participating. Identifiable by a sticker bearing the “Thailand Grand Sale” logo, they will be offering discounts ranging from 10-80% to both local and foreign customers.
Mr. Somboon Krobteerawong, Visa International’s country manager for Thailand and Indochina commented, “We plan to invest about 50 million baht to promote the festival locally and abroad. As the world’s number one payment brand with over one billion cardholders worldwide, we are confident that our exclusive partnership with the Tourism Authority of Thailand will help generate more awareness to the attractions of Thailand and better draw more tourists to the Kingdom.”
TAT is to print 1.3 million copies of a shopping guidebook for distribution to international and domestic tourists via participating shops and department stores as well as at major tourist destinations nation-wide.
Many eye-catching flags and banners will be prominently displayed at all major public areas, shopping centres and about 2,100 petrol stations nation-wide.
Visitors will be encouraged to spend more via a number of creative coupon redemption and rewards schemes.
Twenty-seven redemption booths will be set up at the leading Thai department stores Central, Robinson and The Mall and another 13 booths at the Bangkok Tourist Information Counters. Visitors who spend over 5,000 baht or 10,000 baht will receive a gift set of local products made under the government’s, “One Municipality, One Product” project at the redemption booths.
For every one thousand baht they spend, visitors will be entitled to participate in a lucky draw to win prizes ranging from cars, mobile phones and air tickets to shopping coupons at Narai Phand, Central, Robinson and The Mall. Additional information will be available in the guidebook.
For the first time, the main shopping and discount extravaganzas will be accompanied by 13 special promotions of Made-in-Thailand products in Bangkok. These will include apparel (June 1-10), toys (June 1-14), leatherwear (June 15-24), Thai handicrafts (June 8-17), golf products and equipment (June 15-July 15), Thai fruits (June 8-17), electrical appliances (June 22-July 1), Thai silk (June 30- July 8), jewellery (July 1-15), furniture and home decorations (July 2-12), Thai brand name products (July 13-22), sportswear and apparel (July 20-29) and Thai tourism-related products (June 1-July 31).
Similar shopping festivals will also be held in the prominent tourist cities of Chiang Mai (June 1-4), Udon Thani (June 6-9), Hat Yai (June13-16) and Pattaya (June 27-30).
The campaign will end with the Amazing Thailand Grand Sale Grand Service Fair between July 21-28 at the Queen Sirikit National Convention Centre. Supported by the Department of Export Promotion, it will offer discounted Thai brand-name products as well as products from the “One Municipality, One Product” project, tourism-related products and services, imported products confiscated by the Customs Department and subsequently unclaimed by their owners, Thai food and fruits and various fun fairs.
In 2000, international visitors to Thailand spent an average of 3,861.19 baht (US$96.26) per person per day; of which 1,338.74 baht (US$33.38 or 34.67%) was on shopping. This generated about 285.27 billion baht (US$7.11 billion) tourism foreign exchange revenue for the Thai economy.
