TOURISM BOARD SHOWS TOP ORGANISERS
HONG KONG MEETS GREAT EXPECTATIONS
Thirty representatives of major international associations and professional bodies were today (7 March) given a warm welcome to Hong Kong by Chief Secretary for Administration, The Hon Donald Tsang, JP, and other senior officials at a tea reception held in their honour at the K S Lo Gallery at the Flagstaff House Museum of Tea Ware in Hong Kong Park, Central.
In Hong Kong at the behest of the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB), with full support of the HKSAR government and the travel industry, the group yesterday began a four-day familiarisation programme entitled "Meeting Your Choice", designed to allow them to see and experience for themselves Hong Kong's excellent infrastructure, facilities and world-acclaimed service standards.
The delegates are all office bearers - chairmen or senior executives - of
international professional associations and organisations predominately from the United States, Europe and Australia, with potential to bring 30 conventions and exhibitions to Hong Kong between 2003 and 2012.
Statistics show that, in 2001, visitors who came to Hong Kong to attend conventions and exhibitions totalled nearly 400,000, up 27% over 2000, whose per capita spending stood at HK$10,575.
Speaking at the reception, Mr Tsang said Hong Kong is a dynamic and exciting city where the East really does meet the West. "We have first-rate convention and exhibition facilities and the necessary supporting structures to match. Our infrastructure, including the airport, is second to none. What is more, Hong Kong is one of the safest cities in the world."
Mr Tsang added that many international associations are so impressed with Hong Kong that they have staged their meetings here on more than one occasion.
"The US-based Lions Clubs International held their annual convention in Hong Kong in 1992, with 25,000 delegates and is planning to return in 2005. The International Telecommunications Union (ITU) based in Switzerland organised the Telecom Asia show in 2000 and will do so again this December." Between now and 2005, more than 150 international conventions will be held here.
HKTB Executive Director Ms Clara Chong reiterated that Hong Kong has already proven it meets the expectations of some of the highest profile organisations in the world. "Hong Kong - Meeting Your Choice" programme has been conducted twice before, in 1998 and 1999, with a combined attendance of nearly 130 delegates.
"What this programme shows to potential convention organisers, is that however much we may be able to offer them already, they can be sure that Hong Kong will keep on growing, developing and enhancing its facilities, to meet their demands and as a result, Hong Kong is now viewed globally as a leading convention destination.
"China's accession to the WTO and Beijing's successful bid to host the 2008 Olympics, as well as its burgeoning role as a regional transport and communications hub, make it an ideal base for staging major conferences and conventions. The 'Meeting Your Choice' programme has been further developed to demonstrate this."
Many international and regional conventions are confirmed several years in advance so the HKTB works closely with organisers to update them on new facilities in Hong Kong. The HKTB is also constantly engaged in creating new tours, dining attractions and activities that can generate interest and increase attendance.
Ms Chong said the delegation had this morning toured the Legislative Council building with HKTB Chairman, The Hon Mrs Selina Chow, JP, who briefed them on the role of the Legislative Council. As well as attending a presentation by the local convention industry and networking with local counterparts and service suppliers, there will be inspections of hotels and the latest infrastructure developments, courtesy of the Airport Authority and the Mass Transit Railway Corporation.
Over the next few days the group will participate in a wide range of activities showcasing the latest products and attractions, enjoying tai chi lessons, horse racing at Sha Tin, visits to some of the districts featured in the City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign and dining at a selection of the winning restaurants from the HKTB's Best of the Best Culinary Awards competition.
