NEW HKTB AMBASSADOR
AARON KWOK TO PERFORM
AT CATHAY PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL CHINESE NEW YEAR PARADE
Cantopop star Aaron Kwok
was today (4 February) crowned a City of Life: Hong Kong is it!
Ambassador by the Hong Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) to assist in
promoting Hong Kong.
Aaron Kwok’s first
“mission” will be to participate in the 2002 Cathay Pacific
International Chinese New Year Parade, to be held at the Tamar
Site, Central, on 12 February, the first day of the lunar year.
He will also participate in a host of upcoming major programmes
of the City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign, such as the Mega
Hong Kong Sale in June and the City of Life Street
Carnival in December.
Performing today’s
crowning ceremony, the HKTB’s Executive Director Ms Clara Chong,
expressed her delight in Aaron’s acceptance of the duty.
“Apart from attracting more visitors and making Hong Kong the
focus city of Lunar New Year celebrations among Chinese communities,
the purpose of presenting such a wide range of events and activities
over this period is to encourage Hong Kong residents to stay home
during the festival to benefit the economy,” Ms Chong added.
Speaking
at today’s ceremony, Cathay Pacific Airways General Manager –
Corporate Communication, Mr Alan Wong, said: “As a Hong Kong-based
airline and a member of the tourism industry, over the years Cathay
Pacific has endeavoured
to promote Hong Kong’s tourism business.
This year, we are jointly introducing the Chinese New Year
Fiesta with the HKTB. The
event will help attract even more visitors to Hong Kong to celebrate
this big festival.”
Combining
Chinese and international elements, this year’s parade features a
record number of floats and performing groups from around the world,
the scale of which is the largest since its inception.
Aaron
Kwok said he is bubbling over with excitement about his appointment.
“Hong Kong is my home — a place I take much pride in,” Mr
Kwok said. “I am very
honoured to assist in promoting the City of Life and sincerely hope
that everyone will help to develop the tourism industry by
demonstrating the ‘Be A Good Host’ spirit.”
The
duty is not new to Aaron as he has taken part in promotion activities
in Singapore to boost publicity for the Stars Spectacular show,
organised by the then Hong Kong Tourist Association in 1998.
Being
the performing guest for the parade, Aaron said it would be the first
time he has represented Hong Kong by sending New Year greetings to
hundreds of thousands of viewers worldwide.
Apart from performing for an audience of some 5,000 people for
the opening, he will also be on board the special carriage brought
from the United Kingdom to greet the more than 200,000 spectators
along the procession route.
The
Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Parade will be
televised live in Hong Kong on Television Broadcasts Limited’s Jade
Channel and will be relayed through satellite to different parts of
the world. Shanghai TV
will also relay the programme to TV stations on the Chinese Mainland.
On
the following day, the Cathay Pacific Chinese New Year Fiesta
will take place at the Tamar Site, where 19 fabulous floats will be on
display. This public
party will be complemented by performances by 12 international groups
and booths selling snacks and other merchandise.
Admission is free.
The
HKTB has invited families from the Hong Kong Single Parents
Association to share the fun. One of the performing groups — the Calgary Stampede from
Alberta, Canada — is preparing hot and tasty pancakes for their
enjoyment, in order to disseminate the important message of caring for
the community.
In
celebration of the Year of the Horse, a number of artistes and
celebrities, such as DJs from RTHK’s Radio 1 programme Ready 2 Go
and local singing groups EO2, B2 and Shine, will
take part in a game session and will offer performances between 1:00
pm and 2:00 pm.
The
Fiesta is open from 12 noon until 10:00 pm.
Due to road closures in Central and Wan Chai by the Hong Kong
Police for the Chinese New Year fireworks display, the last admission
is at 7:30 pm.
As
a related event, the HKTB is organising the City of Life: Hong Kong is
it! International Photo Competition.
Participants can win round-trip air tickets, helicopter tours
and other prizes by capturing the City of Life’s enjoyment, fun and
vibrancy on film, at any event in the City of Life: Hong Kong is it!
programme. This includes CLP
Lights Up Hong Kong, the Cathay Pacific International Chinese
New Year Parade and other events, festivals and attractions in
Hong Kong’s 18 Districts.
Entries
should be submitted in 4R photograph or digital format with a
completed entry form. Winning
entries will be posted on the HKTB’s Web site.
Further details can be obtained on the Web site at
DiscoverHongKong.com, or from the nearest HKTB office.
The
Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Parade and Fiesta is
the second major programme of the City of Life: Hong Kong is it!
campaign. A combination
of Chinese and international artistry will make the event a true
meeting of cultures, in keeping with Hong Kong’s reputation as a
living fusion of East and West.
The
City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign is organised by the HKTB in
co-operation with the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Home Affairs
Department, Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Tourism
Commission, with the support of the 18 District Councils and with The
Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust as Principal Sponsor.
