HONG
KONG HOTEL INDUSTRY REPORT MAKES ITS ONLINE DEBUT
The Hong Kong Hotel Industry 2001 report, the latest edition of an
in-depth annual study of hotel revenues, expenditure and
departmental operation in Hong Kong, has just been published – but
for the first time in its 14-year history, the report is available
exclusively online.
Published by the Hong
Kong Tourism Board (HKTB) with the support of Horwarth Asia Pacific
and the Hong Kong Hotels Association, the Hong
Kong Hotel Industry report is considered an invaluable reference
document by local and international hotel operators, who use it to
compare the performance of their establishments with similar hotels
in Hong Kong.
The
HKTB’s General Manager – Strategic Planning & Marketing
Communications, Jacqueline Tong, said the main aim of putting the
report online was to make it easier for industry partners to access,
download and analyse the data. “As this is a specialised report, it is also more
cost-effective to publish it in this way, and more environmentally
friendly,” she added.
The
report can be accessed through PartnerNet (partnernet.hktourismboard.com),
the HKTB’s dedicated Web site for its tourism partners.
Contributors to the study have been given special access
codes enabling them to download the data at no charge.
For others, there is a charge of HK$750 or US$110 for
receiving the online report.
A
leaflet giving highlights of the main findings is, however,
available from the HKTB free of charge.
Among
other interesting facts and figures, the report shows that within
the 70 hotels, hostels and guesthouses surveyed:

Increases in both occupancy and average room rates in 2000
contributed to a HK$101 rise in revenue per available room (REVPAR)
to HK$616, a 19.6% gain on 1999.
·
The average daily room rate for all hotels rose for the first
time since 1997, to HK$756.
·
Food and beverage revenue increased by 6.6% over 1999 while
food and beverage expenses grew by only 1.8%, contributing to a
19.9% increase in departmental profit.
“Although
the data in this report all relates to 2000, and does not reflect the
more difficult conditions that hotels are currently experiencing, it
will be of great value to hotel operators and analysts, and can help
all sectors of Hong Kong’s tourism industry plan more effectively
for the future,” Ms Tong noted.

have been associated with all 14 editions of the Hotel
Industry Report to date. “In
the light of recent events in the US and the general economic
downturn, the business environment will continue to show even greater
volatility,” he commented. “However,
the local hotel industry has always shown a remarkable ability to
respond quickly to changing market conditions.

performing markets regionally and internationally for the foreseeable
future.”
