Tourism
gains as PAL expands Cebu-Seoul flights
Philippine
Airlines has doubled the frequency of its popular service between Cebu
and Seoul to four flights a week in a major move seen to benefit the
struggling tourism industry in the Visayas region.
PAL began
operating two charter flights (Wednesdays and Saturdays) on the route
last Dec. 22 on top of its regular twice-weekly service (Tuesdays and
Sundays).
The
charter flights will be converted into regular scheduled flights soon
to ensure the continuity of enough frequencies to serve the growing
traffic between Cebu and Seoul.
Under the
new bilateral air agreement between the Philippines and Korea, both
countries are allowed to operate an additional four scheduled flights
each.
PAL’s
augmented Korean service gives a strong shot in the arm to an industry
still reeling from last October’s blanket advisory by Japan warning
its citizens against travel to the Philippines.
That
caution dried up Japanese tourist traffic in Cebu and the Visayas
almost overnight, devastating an industry heavily reliant on its
largest market.
“We
believe our expanded Seoul service will be of immense benefit to the
Cebu tourism sector and to our national tourism campaign, considering
that the bulk of our passengers are Korean tourists who can help fill
the vacuum caused by the slump in Japanese traffic,” said PAL
president Avelino L. Zapanta.
Koreans
rank among the ten largest visitor groups to Cebu, with over 6,000
arrivals in 2000 or about 2% of all foreign visitors to the island.
The expansion of direct flights is expected to boost these
figures.
The
new flights (PR 488) depart Cebu every Wednesday and Saturday at 3:20
p.m. and arrive at Seoul’s Incheon International Airport at 8:50
p.m.
The
return service (PR 489) departs Incheon at 9:50 p.m. on the same days,
touching down at Cebu’s Mactan International Airport at 1:25 a.m.
the following day.
PAL
deploys 164-seater Boeing 737-400 aircraft on the new flights.
The old flights on the route (PR 488 / PR 489) continue to
utilize widebody Airbus A330-300 aircraft.
Seoul
is one of PAL’s three current international links from Cebu.
The flag carrier code-shares with Cathay Pacific Airways on the
Hong Kong route and last Dec. 14 launched a weekly charter service to
Shenzhen.
That
service, operated in partnership with locally based Waterfront Hotel
group, has succeeded in opening up Cebu to another emerging tourist
market – mainland China.
PAL
also used to serve Tokyo and Osaka from Cebu, but the sharp drop in
traffic following the Japanese travel advisory has forced the airline
to suspend flights till at least March 30, 2002.
