NEW TV AD
CAMPAIGN TO BOOST US VISITORS
A new $6 million television
campaign will be launched in the United States today promoting
Australia as the world’s best holiday destination, Minister for
Small Business and Tourism, Joe Hockey, said today.
“The new TV ad campaign
will showcase Australia to millions of TV viewers across the United
States and entice them to take their next holiday down under,” the
Minister said.
“The friendly Australian
people, diversity of holiday experiences and the great value holiday
packages will feature in the ads to lure more American travellers to
Australia.
“The TV campaign launched
today will provide a boost to the tourism push already underway in the
US, taking the total advertising spend by the Australian Tourist
Commission and industry partners to $10 million.
The Minister unveiled the
US campaign while visiting tourism and small business operators on the
NSW South Coast. This trip, organised by the Federal Member for
Gilmore, Joanna Gash, was to find out how tourism and small business
operators had been affected by the recent bushfires.
“The US travelling market
has been impacted by the events of September 11, however there are now
strong indications that the market is recovering, with consumer’s
interest in travelling abroad increasing.
“Consumer response to the
newspaper campaigns launched in early January has been strong, and
feedback from industry also indicates that interest in Australia is
outperforming other competitor holiday destinations.
“We need to capitalise on
this trend and convert this interest into bookings, and this new TV ad
campaign will help bring back US visitors to Australia in droves.
Details of the
Government’s campaign include:
The campaign will run until
mid May 2002 with over 2100, 30 second advertisements to be screened
on national cable television stations including BBC America, CNBC,
Discovery, National Geographic Channel, Travel Channel and USA
Network.
Consumers will be driven to
the website, www.australia.com
which will feature 70 two week holiday options starting from under
$US2000.
Most States and Territories
will feature in the campaign with holiday packages on offer to all
major gateways as well as many regional areas. All types of travellers
will be catered for from adventure trips to family vacations to luxury
retreats.
250,000 comprehensive
holiday books featuring the 70 holiday packages will be distributed to
travel agents and consumers across the US.
“Similar ad campaigns
have been launched in all key tourism markets over the past few
months, with Government and industry partners initiating 20
advertising campaigns valued at $17 million.
The Minister said latest
visitor arrival figures showed US visitor arrivals to Australia
declined by 17.5 per cent in the December 2001 quarter compared to the
same time last year, however the market had begun to recover.
“There are signs that the
industry has now turned the corner, and while the industry is faced
with the challenge of rebuilding visitor arrivals to Australia, we
also have the opportunity to grow our share of the global travel
market,” he said.
“We are determined to
make the most of the new opportunities for tourism and the ad
campaigns will play a key role in stimulating travel and rebuilding
one of Australia’s key export industries”.
