AQUA
FANTASIA BACK
IN A FLASH FOR
CHINESE NEW YEAR
The
exciting musical fountain show Rhythm
of Light:
Aqua Fantasia will
resume on 26 January, when buildings around Hong Kong are decorated
with stunning new lighting displays for the upcoming Chinese New Year
celebrations.
More
than 30 Aqua Fantasia shows
will be held at Centenary Garden between 26 January and 26 February. Visitors and residents will be able to enjoy free of charge
the seven-minute show, taking place on Tuesdays, Thursdays and
Saturdays at 6:00 and 8:00 pm.
The
show — which forms an integral part of the Hong Kong Tourism
Board’s CLP
Lights Up Hong Kong programme
— was launched on 11 December 2001 and has been well received by the
more than 180,000 residents and visitors who so far have attended.
Aqua
Fantasia,
the largest outdoor fountain show Hong Kong has ever seen, combines
real fire, light, water and music in a dynamic display to dazzle the
senses. The show includes a 40-metre high “Pillar of Heaven”, symbolising
the city’s energy, and a jet of flame representing the courage,
creativity and dynamism of Hong Kong people.
Besides
witnessing this beautiful display, visitors are encouraged to join in
any of the many exciting tours and events happening over the festive
period. Early last month saw the simultaneous launch of the HKTB’s CLP
Lights Up Hong Kong programme —
the first major event of the City of Life: Hong Kong is it! tourism
campaign — and the
Kowloon Motor Bus company’s Kowloon Circle Hop on, Hop off
Sightseeing Bus, Hong Kong’s first circular sightseeing bus
tour. This
single- decker bus begins and ends its journey at one of the world’s
most popular tourist stops —
the Star Ferry. The route
has stops near various exotic markets, Nathan Road, Hung Hom and the
focal point of CLP
Lights Up Hong Kong, Tsim Sha Tsui East.
The
second major programme of the City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign,
the Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Parade takes
place on 12 February,
Chinese New Year Day.
This parade features a record number of international floats
and performing groups, as well as the largest number of national
tourism organisations, since its inception in 1996.
A combination of Chinese and international artistry will make
the event a true meeting of cultures, in keeping with Hong Kong’s
reputation as a living fusion of East and West.
Starting
6 February and continuing until the early hours of Chinese New
Year’s Day (12 February), visitors wanting to get into the swing of
the festivities can mingle with the happy crowds which throng to the
traditional flower markets in Victoria Park on Hong Kong Island and Fa
Hui Park in Mong Kok. A
riot of colours and scents will bombard the senses as families choose
auspicious blooms and plants to bring luck to their homes and
businesses. Peach and
kumquat trees, narcissus flowers symbolising prosperity, and
tangerines with their leaves intact (ensuring long-lasting
relationships) are all popular choices.
Experience
the fun and excitement of horseracing – Hong Kong-style – on the
third day of Chinese New Year. Even
more popular over the festive period, the outcome of racing on this
day is believed to be an indicator of a person’s fortunes for the
entire Year of the Horse. Visitors
can join one of The Hong Kong Jockey Club’s “Come Horseracing”
tours and experience all the glamour and thrills of the racetrack from
an exclusive private box.
There is no better place
for football fans than Hong Kong over Chinese New Year. On 12 and 15 February, the 2002 Carlsberg Cup will serve up a
feast of top-flight action, featuring China, Slovenia and Honduras as
they take on the cream of Hong Kong’s sporting talent.
This two-day event promises to be a lively warm-up for the 2002
World Cup, having in recent years attracted teams from countries as
far-flung as Japan, the Czech Republic, Mexico, Yugoslavia, Denmark
and Nigeria.
The
highlight of the season’s events must still remain Hong Kong’s
world-famous Chinese New Year fireworks, which will be taking place on
13 February, the second day of Chinese New Year.
Launched from barges in Victoria Harbour, the display often
attracts crowds of 500,000 or more lining the waterfront.
Some of the best vantage points are The Peak, the Star Ferry
Terminal in Central and the waterfront between Tsim Sha Tsui, and Hung
Hom in Kowloon.
