NEW FIGURES SHOW SIGNS
OF RECOVERY FOR TOURISM
New figures released today
show signs of recovery for Australia's inbound tourism industry, with
some key tourism markets returning to growth in January 2002,
Australian Tourist Commission, Managing Director, Ken Boundy said.
Speaking following the
release of the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) Overseas Arrivals
and Departure January 2002 preliminary figures, Mr Boundy said the
figures indicated a 9.6 per cent decline in inbound visitor arrivals
for January 2002 compared to January 2001.
"Despite the decline,
the figures show promising signs for the recovery of Australia's
inbound tourism industry," he said. "The industry has hit
"rock bottom", and is now beginning to slowly recover.
"While this is the
fifth consecutive month of decline in visitor arrivals to Australia,
the drop in January is significantly less than the drop in arrivals in
the December Quarter last year and we expect the market to continue to
improve over the next couple of months.
"US visitor arrivals
have increased by six per cent in January 2002 compared to January
2001 - an encouraging sign given the US was the hardest hit market by
the events of September 11.
"The UK continues to
lead the tourism recovery, with visitor arrivals up by 1.9 per cent in
January 2002 compared to January 2001. In fact, the UK was the largest
source of international visitors for Australia in January.
However, Mr Boundy said the
figures show Asia, Japan and New Zealand had not performed as
strongly, with declines in visitor arrivals for January 2002.
"Visitor arrivals from
Asia fell by 16.1 per cent in January 2002 compared to January 2001
which is a combined result of the changing dates of the Chinese New
Year period and the impact of September 11," Mr Boundy said.
"Last year's festival
fell in January with Asian visitor arrivals to Australia jumping by
33.2 per cent, however this year the holiday period was in February.
As such, we expect strong growth in visitors from key Asian markets in
February 2002 celebrating Chinese New Year in Australia.
"The figures also
indicate a fall of 24.7 per cent in visitor arrivals from New Zealand
in January 2002 compared to January 2001. This is due to a combination
of factors including the lack of air capacity between Australia and
New Zealand.
"Visitors from Japan
have also continued to decline in January 2002 (down 13.7 per cent)
compared to January 2001. However, January last year was an
extraordinary month for the Japanese inbound market, with arrivals
increasing by 20.5 per cent compared to 2000.
"Feedback from
industry in Japan indicates that the group travel market remains slow,
however inquiries and bookings from the independent travellers are
beginning to improve."
Mr Boundy said the figures
indicate recovery of inbound tourism to Australia was not going to
happen overnight and the industry must continue to promote Australia
overseas as a great value and friendly destination with a diverse
range of holiday experiences.
"The ATC has initiated
more than 30 advertising campaigns with industry partners valued at
$29 million in key tourism markets across the globe to help stimulate
demand and capture market share," he said.
"Consumer response to
campaigns in Europe and US has been strong, and operators in the UK
have reported the strongest inquiry levels for holidays to Australia
during December and January. Furthermore, the industry reports that
Australia is also outperforming many competitor destinations.
"Similarly, the new
ATC TV campaign launched only two weeks ago has received over 50,000
consumer inquiries for holidays to Australia."
Visitor
Arrivals show slow recovery -
Minister
of Tourism - Joe Hockey
Today's release of
international visitor arrivals data for January 2002 shows Australia's
inbound tourism industry has passed through the worst of September 11
and is moving into a period of recovering, the Minister for Small
Business and Tourism, Joe Hockey, said today.
In January this year,
Australia attracted 385,100 international visitors, 24,300 visitors
more than in January 2000 but 40,800 less than in January 2001, the
month which carried the crest of the Olympic wave and saw Chinese New
Year occur on 24 January 2001.
Exceeding market
expectations, the US market grew by 6 per cent in January 2002
compared with January 2001. Arrivals from the UK also grew by 2 per
cent when considering the same period.
Visitor arrivals from New
Zealand decreased by 25 per cent and visitors from Japan fell by 14
per cent.
The Korean market showed
continued strong growth with a 13 per cent increase in visitor
arrivals for January 2002 compared with January 2001.
"These numbers show
the market to be entering a recovery mode and are a signal for the
industry to look ahead with growing optimism," the Minister said.
"The tourism
industry's prospects are good in the short to medium term and very
good in the longer term.
"With markets such as
the US performing above market expectations, the $A13 million campaign
currently under way across the US is well targeted to bring this
high-yielding market back at record levels.
"Some countries, such
as Singapore and Malaysia, are more exposed to global economic
downturn and we are seeing some softness in their outbound tourism to
Australia.
"But these markets
have great potential and Australia needs to be able to snare its share
of these overseas visitors.
"The long-strategy I
am developing with the industry will help Australian tourism grow and
strengthen its markets and products.
"Above all I want to
ensure that Australian tourism has a five-star future."
