AUSTRALIAN GEOGRAPHIC TRAVELS AND EXPEDITION
A new experience in adventure travel
In an exciting new strategic relationship, Voyages Hotels and Resorts and Australian Geographic have combined resources to launch Australian Geographic Travels and Expeditions - a new adventure touring company reaching into the far corners of the world.
According to Ken Rosebery,
Managing Director for Australian Geographic, the development of an
adventure travel arm fits with the ethos of Australian Geographic as
an organisation.
"Over the last 15
years, Australian Geographic has established a reputation for
adventure, exploration and scientific discovery. Australian Geographic
Travels and Expeditions (AGT&E) gives us the opportunity to take
that beyond the pages of the magazine and to offer it as a travel
opportunity to our readers" he said.
"For some years we
have been running an ad hoc travel program with departures to
Antarctica and the Kimberley's, however the potential for taking this
further has grown significantly in the last 2 - 3 years.
"Our branding and
reputation combined with the skills and marketing expertise of a
tourism management company such as Voyages Hotels and Resorts, who
already have a proven track record in environmentally sensitive
regions, puts AGT&E in an enviable position in the
marketplace," said Mr Rosebery.
With a stated mission of
becoming Australia's leading manager of experiential tourism assets,
this strategic alliance will see Voyages Hotels and Resorts take a
strong lead in the adventure travel arena.
"Very few travel
companies can boast an expertise in travel and tourism in ecologically
sensitive areas and a foundation built on sound environmentally
responsible principles. The fit between Voyages Hotels and
Resorts and Australian Geographic on this project is clear", said
Mr Hunt, CEO for Voyages Hotels and Resorts.
"The emergence of a
market in search of holistic experiences that enrich and replenish the
body, mind and spirit, has created opportunities for travel to unique
and special destinations not seen before, for experiences to learn and
enrich oneself.
"This is at the very
heart of both our corporate philosophy, our involvement with
Australian Geographic and the mind set behind the development and
launch of Australian Geographic Travels and Expeditions", he
said.
The AGTE tour program
offers a range of tours that are unique to the marketplace and in many
instances are a one-off event. Another element that sets the program
aside as different are the expedition tour guides. In nearly all
instances, Australian Geographic expert guides accompany the tours.
Such guides include Greg Mortimer, among whose achievements is being
the first Australian to climb Mt Everest; Garth Thompson, one of
Africa's truly great naturalists and wildlife raconteurs; and Don and
Margie McIntyre, famous in Australia for the "Expedition
Ice-bound" where they wintered along in a tiny 3.6m x 2.4m hut in
the Antarctica.
The itineraries -
with a mix of 25% international and 75% domestic product - are
designed to work with the philosophies of the magazine.
Destinations and tours
featured in the program include a cruise through the Weddell Sea in
the Antarctic Circle; a birdwatching safari through southern Africa; a
photographic expedition to Vietnam; trekking through Tasmania's
Freycinet National Park; an overland safari through the Kimberley's;
sea kayaking around Hinchinbrook Island; Franklin River Rafting and
more.
The first scheduled
departure for the tour program is 6 April 2002 - the Ultimate Red
Centre Discovery - an 8 day journey through the Red Centre
visiting sites such as Mt Conner, Lake Amadeus, Kings Canyon, Palm
Valley, Hermannsberg Historical Precinct, Chambers Pillar, Rainbow
Valley and of course Uluru and Kata-Tjuta.
