DUBAI SHOPPING FESTIVAL 2002 TO ROLL OUT BARGAINS, PROMOTIONS AND
ENTERTAINMENT
The
Dubai Shopping Festival (DSF), the exciting and colourful shopping and
entertainment extravaganza in the Middle East, will be held for the
seventh consecutive year in Dubai from March 1 to 31, 2002.
The
organizers of the month-long festival, which offers shopping bargains,
pulsating live entertainment, world class musicals and concerts,
international sports events and numerous promotions giving away
fabulous prizes such as luxury cars, cash and gold, have lined up a
new and exciting programme for DSF 2002.
The
Dubai Shopping Festival, launched in 1996 by the Government of Dubai
in collaboration with the private sector, has gained wide global
recognition with its successful formula combining great shopping with
fabulous entertainment and exciting promotions serving as a shining
example for similar events throughout the world.
According
to an independent study commissioned by the Government of Dubai, DSF
2001 registered a 12 per cent increase in the number of overseas
visitors. The study shows that the number of overseas visitors rose to
728,000 from 650,000, with significant attendance from Europe and
South and South East Asia. Total visitors to DSF 2001 increased by
50,000, from 2.5 to 2.55 million, whereas total overall consumer
spending increased by 5 per cent from US$ 1.17 billion to US$ 1.23
billion. Of this, shopping-only expenditure accounted for US$ 823
million, against US$ 809 million in 2000.
Commenting
on the results, Mr. Hussain Ali Lootah, Chief Executive Officer of DSF,
said: ”The significant increase in the number of international
visitors is further proof that the Dubai Shopping Festival has become
a major annual event on the global tourism calendar. The overwhelming
response to the DSF mega-concerts is an indication that the “new
look” given to DSF 2001 was successful. This has encouraged us to
continue the staging of large scale events in our programming for DSF
2002.”
Mega
Events
Among
the star attractions of DSF 2002 will be a dazzling stage production
called Two Thousand and One Nights, presenting in a
quintessentially Arabian setting the beautiful and legendary stories
of Sheherazade that have been enjoyed by generations. The brand-new
show, involving a team of 300 international artists and technicians
boasts the highest standards in set design, music score, choreography,
costumes, sound and lighting.
In
addition to this cultural highlight, an impressive
array of sporting events will attract
millions during the Dubai Shopping Festival,
led by the Dubai World Cup, the world’s richest horse race, the
Dubai Desert Classic, a stop on the PGA tour, and the Dubai Tennis
Open, an ATP event.
Daily
Fun
Major
highlights of the annual Festival include nightly fireworks over the
picturesque Dubai Creek, street carnivals and live entertainment
featuring international cartoon characters. The DSF
is bringing more than 400 street performers and folk artistes from
around the globe to brighten up its venues and celebrate the theme One
World One Family One Festival. In addition to these performers, throughout
the month of March many international entertainers will hit Dubai’s
stages, all in the spirit of the festival.
Visitors
will enjoy a lively international ambience at the DSF Global Village
where they can experience the arts, crafts and culture of 50 countries
in an attractive open-air setting.
The
Dubai Shopping Festival’s Carpet Oasis is another yearly attraction
offering the finest handmade carpets from the most famous
carpet-producing countries in the Middle East. Visitors can watch
carpet weavers in action as they demonstrate the painstaking methods
of making these beautiful and intricate carpets.
Bargains & Prizes
Galore
Fabulous
daily raffles are one of the key ingredients that put Dubai Shopping
Festival on every tourist’s itinerary. Last
year 31 people became lucky winners of the three-in-one prize
consisting of 2 Lexus cars and a cash prize of Dirhams 100,000 (US$
27,000). Thirty-one other people won a family holiday with Business
Class airfare and 5-star accommodation to nine destinations, 31 other
winners received one kilo of gold, while one lucky person walked away
with the grand prize of 10 kg of gold on the last day of the Festival.
The raffle prizes at DSF 2002 are expected to be even more valuable
and impressive.
DSF’s
main attraction, as always, will be the huge shopping discounts.
During the Festival visitors
can buy the world’s
best brands at the world’s best prices.
Over
2,500 retail outlets across the emirate participate in DSF, offering
goods and services that range from the latest in high fashion and
perfumes to jewellery, electronics, cosmetics, textiles and
traditional handicrafts.
Emirates
Airline, the
official carrier and key sponsor of DSF, flies in visitors from 52
destinations. The airline offers discounted fares and extra baggage
allowance during the Festival. Special
hotel packages will offer a free two-night stay during Dubai Summer
Surprises, Dubai’s other Festival which takes place in summer, to
guests staying for three nights during DSF. This is in addition to
varying discounts and offers lined up by individual hotels.
