WORLD YOUTH TRAVEL CONFERENCE TO RETURN TO THAILAND
The world's biggest youth and student travel conference is to make a comeback to Thailand in 2003, only four years after being hosted here in 1999.
It is the first time in its history that the World Youth and Students Travel Conference (WYSTC) has returned to the same country destination within such a short period of time.
While the 1999 conference was held in Bangkok, the WYSTC 2003 will be held at the Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (PEACH) in Chonburi province in September 2003.
The conference brings together the Federation of International Youth Travel Organisations (FIYTO) and International Student Travel Confederation
(ISTC).
The official announcement was made at the Internationale
Tourismus-Bourse (ITB) 2002 in Berlin this lastweek, giving a further boost to the high profile that Thailand expects to have at the world’s largest travel trade show.
Tourism Authority of Thailand Acting Governor and Deputy Governor for Marketing Mrs. Juthamas Siriwan commented, "We are absolutely delighted with this move and very grateful to both FIYTO and ISTC for their confidence in Thailand."
Noted as the world's most powerful gathering of buyers and sellers of youth and student travel products and services, the WYSTC will help highlight the kingdom’s strong potential in this fast- growing market.
The event features a trade fair plus seminars, conferences, and workshops focusing on trends and issues in the youth and student travel sector. Specialist tour operators from the Mekong and ASEAN countries will have yet another opportunity to develop contacts in this high-potential market.
For Thailand, the event will help showcase the wide variety of tourism products and services specially designed for the youth market like ecotourism, adventure travel and
homestay.
According to Mrs. Juthamas, youth and student travel is a very significant market for Thailand. Young travellers normally stay longer than normal visitors, are very environmentally and socially conscious and have very high repeat-traffic potential.
They are effective disseminators of tourism foreign exchange revenue since they spend money at grassroot levels of society, thus supporting small- and medium-sized businesses especially in rural areas.
“All these are very much in line with our future marketing and development strategies,” Mrs. Juthamas said.
In 2001, under-25 visitor to Thailand totalled 1,523,952, up 4.72% over 2000 and comprising 15.15% of total arrivals. Visitors identifying themselves as students totalled 1,137,914, up 7.03%, one of the fastest growing market categories.
The TAT will assist the WYSTC by promoting it both within Thailand and abroad, and coordinating with the public and private sectors to ensure all delegates and accompanying delegates enjoy their stay in Pattaya. A variety of pre/post-tour packages will be organised to allow them to sightsee many popular destinations in Thailand.
The 2001 WYSTC conference in Cancun, Mexico, was attended by 711 participants from 381 commercial organizations and 16 official tourism organisation. Of these, 73 were first time organisations. The upcoming WYSTC 2002 will be held in Rhodes, Greece, between 29 September-5 October 2002.
Thailand has previously hosted the annual meetings of Federation of International Youth Travel Organizations (FIYTO) in 1979, and the International Student Travel Confederation (ISTC) in 1989.
The Kingdom's potential as a world-class MICE destination is winning it global accolades. Major factors which help attract major international MICE events to Thailand include its excellent MICE venues and facilities, variety of tourism destinations, value-for-money tourism products and services as well as warm hospitality of the Thai people.
The newly established US$38 million Pattaya Exhibition and Convention Hall (PEACH) at the Royal Cliff Beach Resort, the venue of WYSTC 2003, is recognised as the biggest facility for MICE in eastern Thailand.
