HIGH PROFILE PRESENCE FOR THAILAND AT ITB 2002
A delegation of 104 sellers of the travel and tourism industry from Thailand will be in Germany between 16-20 March, 2002, for the Internationale
Tourismus-Bourse (ITB) in Berlin, the world’s biggest travel trade show.
Led by the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the Thai delegation will include senior executives of hotels, tour operators, airlines, car rental companies, MICE venues and organisers as well as local promotion agencies from
Pattaya.
In line with global travel trends and consumer preferences in Europe, special emphasis will be placed on promoting new Thai tourism niche products such as its world-class health and spa resorts, unique arts and handicrafts, newly developed supplementary destinations and excellent MICE venues.
Many new tourism promotion campaigns and festivals including ‘Be My Guest’ and ‘Thailand Grand Festival’ will be highlighted in addition to the country's traditional focus on positioning Thailand as a gateway to the Greater Mekong Subregion and an international MICE venue.
This year, several tourism businesses and provincial tourism officials from Pattaya will be participating to promote the resort city, which has undergone many major tourism-related infrastructure improvements.
TAT Acting Governor and Deputy Governor for Marketing Mrs. Juthamas Siriwan commented, “One of the major trends in the global travel and tourism industry is the desire for travellers to enjoy quality holidays. So, it is necessary for us as promoters of travel destinations to ensure that we fulfill that desire.
“Our ‘Be My Guest’ campaign is designed to promote Thailand as a high quality, value-for-money destination while the ‘Thailand Grand Festival’ will supplement the main campaign by creating a wider range of activities with different monthly themes for visitors to enjoy, no matter which part of the year they choose to travel,” added Mrs.
Juthamas.
Located in a 504-sq.m.-area under the theme “Boat Temple on the Sea”, the Thai- style pavilion at the ITB will convey a bright and festive atmosphere enhanced by a free traditional Thai massage and demonstration of fruit/vegetable carving.
At the 2001 ITB, Berlin visitors queued up by the dozens for the free, five-minute massage, one of the most popular stops in the entire show.
Along with the main exhibition, TAT with support from Thai Airways International and Bangkok Airways will host a number of social activities. One highlight will be a press conference at the ICC Hall on 17 March to publicise the Kingdom’s excellent tourism campaigns and developments, especially its status as gateway to the Mekong region.
In addition, tourism businesses and provincial tourism officials from Pattaya will organise a dinner reception under the theme, ‘Pattaya Night’ at Zollernhof on 18 March, 2002.
The world’s biggest travel trade show, the ITB 2002 is now in its 36th year. Thailand has participated every year since 1976. The 2001 event was attended by 10,149 exhibitors, up 13% over 2000, from 179 countries and territories.
In 2001, German visitors to Thailand totalled 398,034, an increase of 5.14% over 2000. In Europe, Germany is the second most important source market for Thailand.
There are 26 weekly direct flights between Germany and Thailand, of these 22 are between Frankfurt and Bangkok by Thai Airways (THAI) and Lufthansa Airlines, and four between Munich and Bangkok by THAI.
