THAILAND TO WELCOME
WORLD’S LARGEST CRUISE SHIP
Thailand will welcome the
world’s largest and most, luxurious new cruise ship, the “Star
Princess”, at Laem Chabang Port, Chonburi province, on February 15,
2002.
Her Royal Highness Princess
Ubolratana will graciously visit and tour the ship, attend the
luncheon reception hosted in her honour and present small tokens of
appreciation to the Ship’s Captain and senior executives.
With a total of 109,000 gross tonnage and capability to accommodate up
to 2,600 passengers, the Star Princess will be the most modern cruise
vessel ever to make a call in Thailand.
TAT Acting Governor and Deputy Governor for Marketing Mrs. Juthamas
Siriwan said, “We are very grateful to and honoured by the presence
of Her Royal Highness Princess Ubolratana for gracing the occasion.
“The Laem Chabang terminal was specifically designed to cater to
large cruise ships of this type. Cruise tourism is expected to be one
of our major growth areas in the future, and we are very happy that
P&O Princess Cruises has included Laem Chabang on the inaugural
itinerary.”
Having just rolled off the dockyards in January 2002, the vessel is
now on its first 26-day cruise trip from Singapore to Los Angeles,
USA, via Thailand, Hong Kong and Japan between February 13 – March
10, 2000.
During their one-day stop in Thailand, visitors will be able to choose
from among the numerous tour options to Bangkok, Pattaya and nearby
provinces.
Mrs. Juthamas said, “This will give them a chance to enjoy a brief
tour of Thailand and enjoy fabulous shopping opportunities. Hopefully,
it will encourage them to come back for a longer stay in the
future.”
TAT will organise a Thai classical dance performance and music band to
welcome the passengers. They will also be given a number of the
TAT’s brochures on Thailand as well as souvenirs to help them
remember their visit and tell their friends, families and colleagues
about it.
Star Princess is one of 19 luxury ships operated by P&O Princess
Cruises, one of the world’s largest international cruise companies.
Registered in Bermuda, the ship will be deployed to serve Mexico
(during winter 2001/2002) and Alaska (summer 2002).
The ship also features world-class facilities including nightclubs,
six restaurants (three of these open 24-hours), a theatre and cinema,
four swimming pools, nine spa pools, a fitness club with sauna and
massage services, wedding room, four duty-free shops, kid’s club,
library, self- service laundry rooms, etc.
Laem Chabang Port is about 30-minutes drive from the famous beach
resort of Pattaya or about two-hours drive from Bangkok.
Visitor arrivals to Thailand by sea totalled 249,511 in 2001. Major
contributing markets included the ASEAN countries, especially
Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia, Australia, the UK and the US.
