SINGAPORE TOURISM SECTOR PERFORMANCE AS AT JANUARY 2002
Singapore Visitor Arrivals in January 2002
¨ Visitor arrivals in January 2002 fell by 9.4% over the same month in 2001, to a total of 596,069 visitors. The global economic slowdown coupled with the negative repercussions of the September 11 terrorists' attacks continue to affect arrivals from all regions.
¨ The 12 largest visitor-generating markets were:

¨ Indonesia arrivals dropped 9.4% over January 2001, with holiday traffic down by 23.7%.
¨ Arrivals from Hong Kong, China and Taiwan fell largely due the shift in the Chinese New Year holiday period from January in 2001 to February this year. This resulted in a decline in holiday visitors from Hong Kong (-59.1%), China (-20.6%) and Taiwan (-6.6%).
¨ Australia arrivals fell 5.7% as cautious consumer sentiments continued to dampen visitor traffic from Australia (especially for travel to Europe that would require a stopover in Singapore). More Australians have opted for domestic tourism as a result of high departure taxes for international travel.
¨ Arrivals from Malaysia fell 12.5%, largely due to the drop in air arrivals (-14.8%). This was attributed to the increase in airfares as well as the reduction in air capacity.
¨ Arrivals from South Korea registered a growth of 18.0% as a result of the increase in business-related traffic (27.1%).
¨ The increase in arrivals from India was supported by the rise in holiday traffic (13.7%).
¨ Visitor traffic from Thailand rose as Thai travellers started to regain their confidence in air travel, coupled with affordable packages for regional travel. Air arrivals grew by 7.7%
¨ Holiday arrivals from the top 12 markets fell by 19.0%. With the exception of South Korea (+16.6%) and India (+13.7%), all major markets registered declines in this segment. Holiday travel from Hong Kong (-59.1%), Japan (-37.2%), USA (-28.1%), Malaysia (-24.4%), Indonesia (-23.7%) and China (-20.6%) posted significant decreases.
¨ Overall, business-related1 traffic from the top 12 markets rose by 10.7%, with China leading the growth (+34.1%), followed by South Korea (+27.1%), Indonesia (+18.7%), Thailand (+14.8%), Australia (+14.1%), Taiwan (+12.6%), Malaysia (+7.7%) and UK (+6.9%).
