CATHAY PACIFIC INTERNATIONAL CHINESE
NEW YEAR PARADE ENTERTAINS AUDIENCES WORLDWIDE
The
Year of the Horse was given extra “horsepower” today (12 February)
as the 2002 Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Parade brought
Hong Kong’s harbourfront alive, entertaining more than 280,000
spectators in Central and Wan Chai and millions more through live and
delayed broadcasts around the world.
Combining
Chinese and international elements, the parade featured a record
contingent — nine international and 13 local floats and 15
international and 24 local performing groups — the largest since its
inception in 1996.
The event was the second major programme of the City of Life:
Hong Kong is it! tourism campaign.
The
spectacular began at 1:30pm, officiated by Hong Kong’s Chief
Secretary for Administration, The Hon Mr Donald Tsang, JP; Hong Kong
Tourism Board (HKTB) Chairman, The Hon Mrs Selina Chow, JP; Title
Sponsor Cathay Pacific Airways Director and Chief Operating Officer,
Mr Philip Chen, JP; and City of Life: Hong Kong is it! Principal
Sponsor The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust Deputy Chairman, Mr
Chau Cham Son, LLD, JP.
They
were joined by Hong Kong Tourism Board Executive Director, Ms Clara
Chong; Acting Commissioner for Tourism, Mr Duncan W Pescod; Deputy
Director of Home Affairs, Ms Grace Lui, JP; and Acting Deputy Director
(Leisure Services) of Leisure and Cultural Services Department, Mr
Johnny Woo.
The
Tamar Site in Central buzzed with excitement as City of Life: Hong
Kong is it! Ambassador Aaron Kwok performed with local singing group Twins,
presenting auspicious lunar year songs.
Supported by Chinese, Japanese and Korean drums, and dances by Television
Broadcasts Limited’s artistes,
the stars wished everyone a healthy and prosperous new year.
Aaron
Kwok then boarded a classical carriage drawn by two horses specially
brought to Hong Kong by The Hong Kong Jockey Club from the United
Kingdom for the parade.
Having performed for an audience of 5,000 at the Tamar Site,
this popular Cantopop performer greeted spectators along the
procession route.
Led
by the horse carriage, the parade wended its way to the Hong Kong
Convention and Exhibition Centre before returning to the Tamar Site.
The procession ended at around 3:30pm.
In
addition to thrilling spectators in Hong Kong, millions around the
world enjoyed the show. The event was televised live in Hong Kong on
Television Broadcasts Limited’s Jade Channel.
As the Official Broadcaster in Mainland China for the parade, Shanghai
TV relayed the programme through its satellite channel to more than
1,300 local TV stations, while TVBI Company Limited broadcast the show
to different parts of the world.
Internet buffs worldwide
also enjoyed the programme via simultaneous transmission on the
HKTB’s DiscoverHongKong.com Web site.
Tomorrow
(13 February), the 2002 Cathay Pacific Chinese New Year Fiesta
takes place at the Tamar Site, where 19 fabulous floats will be on
display. This
public party will be complemented by performances by 13 international
groups and booths selling snacks and other merchandise.
Admission is free.
A
number of artistes and celebrities, such as DJs from RTHK’s Radio 1
programme Ready 2 Go and local singing groups EO2, B2
and Shine, will take part in a game session and offer
performances between 1:00 pm and 2:00 pm.
The
HKTB has invited families from the Hong Kong Single Parents
Association to share the fun.
One of the performing groups — the Calgary Stampede from
Alberta, Canada — is preparing hot and tasty pancakes for their
enjoyment, in order to disseminate the important message of caring for
the community.
The
Fiesta is open from 12 noon until 10:00 pm.
Due to road closures in Central and Wan Chai by the Hong Kong
Police for the Chinese New Year fireworks display, the last admission
is at 7:30 pm.
As
a related event, the HKTB is organising the City of Life: Hong Kong is
it! International Photo Competition.
Participants can win round-trip air tickets, helicopter tours
and other prizes by capturing the City of Life’s enjoyment, fun and
vibrancy on film, at any event in the City of Life: Hong Kong is it!
programme. This
includes CLP Lights Up Hong Kong, the Cathay Pacific
International Chinese New Year Parade and other events, festivals
and attractions in Hong Kong’s 18 Districts.
Entries
should be submitted in 4R photograph or digital format with a
completed entry form.
Winning entries will be posted on the HKTB's Web site.
The
Cathay Pacific International Chinese New Year Parade was the
second major programme of the City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign.
A combination of Chinese and international artistry has made
the event a true meeting of cultures, in keeping with Hong Kong’s
reputation as a living fusion of East and West.
The
City of Life: Hong Kong is it! campaign is organised by the HKTB in
co-operation with the Hong Kong SAR Government’s Home Affairs
Department, Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Tourism
Commission, with the support of the 18 District Councils and with The
Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust as Principal Sponsor.
