Hilton Hua Hin Resort and Spa launches Mango Plantation

Travel News Asia 25 February 2003

Hilton Hua Hin Resort and Spa has just successfully launched their ecological mango plantation, the first ever plantation managed by a hotel chain in Hua Hin, Thailand and the first of its kind initiative done on a large  scale by a Hilton hotel.

At a simple ceremony to officiate the resorts green initiave campaign, the hotel team members led by Peer Norsell, director of operations and Treepop  Paojeen the resorts engineer and his engineering brigade planted the first 100 trees of the nam dork mai Thai mango species.

The Hilton Hua Hins mango plantation will have 230 mango trees covering  an area of two rai, which is equivalent to 3,200 sq metres. The project is the brainchild of the resorts director of operations, Peer Norsell.

In two to three years time, these mango trees are expected to yield more than 100 kilos of fresh mangos and hotel guests will be able to enjoy the  freshly picked sweet riped mangos for dessert have them fresh or served as a Thai popular dessert, mango and sticky rice.

In tune with our resorts environmental concern, we only use natural forms  of fertilisers to take care of the mango plantation. From hereon, we hope to work on other initiatives such as planting other types of tropical fruits and vegetables," said Peer Norsell.

The exercise also encourages teambuilding among hotel employees, encouraging each hotel team member to play a small role in the  development of the resorts green initiave campaign.

Other ecological concerns and initiatives taking place at the Hilton Hua Hin  include usage of natural products for room amenities, encouraging guests and employees to conserve water and electricity, educating staff and guests on waste disposal, extensive use of recycle paper products and usage of  bio-degradable products by the resorts kitchen and housekeeping team.
