Day 1: Poor Weather Delays Start of Cape
Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek 2019
Optimism amongst the sailors taking part in the
16th annual Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek soared early on
Thursday morning as they awoke to a blue sky and glorious
sunshine.
That positivity was unfortunately short lived as
dark clouds, gathered on the distant horizon, quickly rolled in and by the time competitors boarded their yachts for the
first day of racing, the heavens had already opened.
Rain doesn't deter a true sailor and yachts
headed out to the start area off Koh Lon while the spectator and
media boats followed.
Shifting, gusty winds, and very low
visibility around the southeast coast, sprinkled with some
thunder and lightning, forced Race Management's hand to send all back to shore to wait it out. They eventually flagged AP over A and called it a day at 1pm.
The Cape Panwa Hotel Phuket Raceweek is taking
place from 17-21 July 2019 and has attracted top sailors, and
their families, from around the world. This is the 16th year that
the event is taking place, bringing much needed publicity and
tourism revenue to Phuket and other parts of Thailand.
