Nicarnica to Enhance Elbit’s ClearVision EVS with Ash Detection Technology

Elbit Systems and Nicarnica Aviation have signed a Memorandum of Understanding to cooperate on an exclusive basis for the implementation on commercial aircraft of Nicarnica’s volcanic ash detection technology into Elbit Systems’ Enhanced Vision System (EVS) cameras.

The combined solution will enable pilots to avoid flying into contaminated areas while still maintaining safe operation in areas influenced by volcanic eruptions.

Nicarnica has developed a breakthrough technology; AVOID (Airborne Volcanic Object Imaging Detector) to detect volcanic ash in the atmosphere 100 kilometers ahead of an aircraft, allowing the pilot to detect and safely avoid hazardous ash clouds.

Implementing the technology into ClearVision EVS will enable customers to achieve additional critical functionality without additional equipment.

Ove Bratsberg, CEO of Nicarnica Aviation, said, “We are excited and looking forward to our collaboration with Elbit Systems. This will take us closer to realizing the goal of an on-board ash detection system and offering it worldwide within the shortest possible time. This will help the aviation industry avoid the economic damage created by crises such as the 2010 Eyjafjallajökull eruption that crippled European aviation for several days.”
