Eaton Hotel in Hong Kong has again been awarded
the EarthCheck Silver Certificate for its ongoing commitment to
environmentally friendly practices and causes.
In order to achieve
Silver status, Eaton, Hong Kong has had to report its
environmental performance to the independent auditor and be
benchmarked against international best practice standards recognised across the travel and tourism industry. An in-depth
on-site assessment was also conducted at the hotel.
Of the
eight areas assessed, Eaton, Hong Kong achieved Best Practice
rating in no fewer than five sections, including policy,
minimizing energy consumption, greenhouse gas emissions, potable
water consumption, waste sent to landfill and the rating of
cleaning products used.
“We’re delighted to be certified by
EarthCheck, and are very proud of everyone who has been involved
in this process. The Silver status proves the success of Eaton,
Hong Kong’s on-going practices in developing and maintaining our environmental policy. But we’re not content to stop there and are
now exploring ways to take our energy for these causes in to the
wider community, both locally and across the industry,” said
Shane Pateman, General Manager of Eaton, Hong Kong.
Since
2009, Eaton, Hong Kong has been continuously launching major
efforts to actively strengthen its commitment to sustainability and has incorporated these concepts into
numerous areas of the hotel and its operation:
Introduction of Green Wall – featuring 3,600 Sansevieria
trifasciata plants that assist in improving indoor air quality
through photosynthesis.
Use of Sustainable and Renewable
Resources – fully sustainable and renewable bamboo wood material
is used as an alternative to wood for lobby walling to minimise
the impact of industrial logging.
Launch of Smart Room
Product – To demonstrate of how stylish well-chosen “green”
products can be today, this newly launched room uses only LED
lighting, a modern environmentally-friendly woven-vinyl flooring
and revolutionary acoustic wall panels that are produced with
recycled materials.
Reducing the Hotel’s Carbon Footprint
To reduce the hotel’s carbon footprint, Eaton
has taken further
proactive steps with a series of new green initiatives:
Invest in new technology to minimise plastic waste –
Eaton, Hong
Kong has suspended the use of plastic bottled water. Instead the
hotel invested HK$500,000 to install an eco-friendly drinking
water purification system that allows glass bottles to be re-used.
Development of eco-friendly services – To encourage
guests to go green with Eaton, additional eco-friendly services
have been rolled out such as offering wider vegetarian choices for
diners every Monday, the development of the “Green Meetings by
Eaton” meeting package to ensure every element of meetings held at
Eaton will be environmentally friendly and able to achieve the
target of reducing the client’s carbon footprint, as well as that
of the hotel.
