According to the July 2013 STR Pipeline Report,
the total active U.S. hotel development pipeline comprises 2,730
projects totaling 328,382 rooms.
This represents a 9.1% increase
in the number of rooms in the total active pipeline compared with
July 2012 and a 23.1% increase in rooms under construction.
The
total active pipeline data includes projects in the In
Construction, Final Planning and Planning stages, but does not include projects in the Pre-Planning stage.
Among the Chain
Scale segments, the Upper Upscale segment reported the largest
increase in rooms in the total active pipeline, rising 20.5% with
21,050 rooms.
Two other segments reported double-digit increases
in rooms in the total active pipeline, compared to July 2012: the
Upscale segment (+18.1% with 89,440 rooms), and the Unaffiliated
segment (+13.2% with 97,413 rooms).
The luxury segment reported
the only double-digit decrease in rooms in the total active
pipeline, falling 13.2% with 6,900 rooms.
Three segments
achieved growth of 40.0% or more in rooms under construction: the
Luxury segment (+443.5% with 4,690 rooms); the Midscale segment
(+42.2% with 3,418 rooms); and the Upscale segment (+40.0% with
27,451 rooms).
The Economy segment reported the largest decrease
in rooms under construction, falling 27.0% with 978 rooms.
