It's another sell-out for the world-famous
Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.
The last remaining 4,000 tickets reserved for
public sale were distributed last week via the Hong Kong Rugby
Football Union’s first ever public ticket ballot.
At the close of the registration period
for the ballot, a total of 25,154 ballots were
received applying for 49,602 tickets.
Of the applications received, 95% requested to
purchase the maximum individual allocation of two event tickets,
should their ballots be drawn.
The demand for an additional 49,602 Sevens
tickets over and above the 36,000 tickets distributed to date,
clearly surpasses the 40,000-seat capacity of the Hong Kong
Stadium.
“The
HKRFU welcomes the continued strong public demand for the Hong
Kong Sevens. The public ballot has helped us to more accurately
quantify the demand for Sevens tickets for the first time. This information is an important verification in our drive to work with
all relevant parties for the development of a larger stadium in
Hong Kong,” said HKRFU Chairman. Mr Trevor Gregory. “Unfortunately, public demand for Sevens tickets far
exceeds the capacity of the Hong Kong Stadium but the HKRFU is hopeful that the switch to a public ballot has at least offered
all applicants an equal opportunity to purchase tickets, whilst at
the same time offering a more convenient method for interested
spectators to apply for these tickets. We again would like to
thank the Hong Kong community for their continued and outstanding
support to the Cathay Pacific / HSBC Hong Kong Sevens.”
The ballot draw, which was attended by a representative of PriceWaterhouseCoopers, was conducted via an electronic random
number generating system developed by the Hong Kong Jockey Club
and verified by BMM Compliance, a long-established and experienced
private independent gaming certification lab.
Successful
applicants now have until 21 February 2013 to pay for their
tickets with ticket
distribution to start in the week commencing Monday, 4 March,
via collection from the Box Office at Hong Kong Stadium.
With
the hosting of 28 international teams for the first time in the
event’s 38-year history, the 2013 Cathay Pacific/HSBC Hong Kong
Sevens promises to be the biggest and best Hong Kong Sevens ever.
The official tournament draw will be held on Thursday, 21
February 2013, in Hong Kong.
