Sir Peter Blake has created a sparkling union
jack phone box using more than 400,000 Swarovski Elements for BT
ArtBox, a celebration of the 25th anniversary of Childline.
Sir Peter, who celebrates his 80th
birthday on 25th June, is renowned for his Pop Art style and his
ability to create works of art out of an eclectic collage of
materials.
For BT ArtBox he has covered a full-scale
replica of the classic UK phone box in a riot of red, white and
blue Swarovski crystals, to celebrate the 25th anniversary of
Childline and raise funds and awareness for the charity, which
gives millions of children a chance to talk about their problems.
Sir Peter said, “It has been a pleasure to
use Sir Giles Gilbert Scott’s iconic phone box and to work with
Swarovski to create a celebration of Britishness in 2012, the year
of the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee and the London Olympic Games.”
Sir Peter’s ArtBox
will be displayed on Bond Street until 16 July 2012 and in the
window of Harvey Nichols during the Olympics.
Nadja Swarovski, Member of the Executive Board, Swarovski Crystal
Business, said, “Sir Peter Blake’s legendary ability to combine
materials, colours and inspiration made him the perfect artist for
Swarovski to collaborate with. He has created a spectacular new
take on Gilbert Scott’s British design classic in support of Childline - such a fantastic cause.”
