The Bali Hotels Association (BHA), a
professional group of star-rated hotels and resorts in Bali, has
formed a “BHA Green Team”.
The Green Team consists of representatives from
member hotels around Bali who are responsible for environmental
and sustainability initiatives. The Green Team meets once a month
to share ideas and attend presentations from various environmental
organizations and green suppliers. It serves not only as a forum
for education but also a place for sharing ideas and networking.
This year the BHA has selected as one of its key
environmental initiatives “Say No to Disposable Plastic”. The
Green Team members monitor and measure their plastics usage at
each hotel and submit metrics every month to the BHA.
The objective of the initiative is to reduce and
replace disposable plastics with more environmentally friendly
alternatives such as bio-degradable plastics, glass, ceramics,
etc., wherever possible. Participant hotels hope to achieve a 20%reduction in disposable plastics as a group within the
next 12 months, which would equate to approximately 5,000 of
kilograms of disposable plastics per month.
Bipan Kapur,
BHA Director of Environment, said, “The enthusiasm, drive and
energy in the Green Team gives me the confidence that we are doing
the right thing and that this new generation will go all out to
protect what is most precious to mankind. We are indebted to them
as them as they truly understand the value and importance of
preservation for the future.”
Plastic is one of
the most toxic pollutants of our time. Being a non-biodegradable
substance composed of toxic chemicals, plastic pollutes the earth,
air and water. It is estimated that Bali generates approximately
750,000 kilograms of plastic garbage per day, almost 50%
more than Jakarta.
BHA Chairman Jean-Charles Le Coz said,
“I am very proud to lead an organization that has been, since
2003, proactively tackling environmental issues through training,
and sharing of best practices and events like Clean Up the
World. This year’s initiative of ‘Say No To Disposable
Plastic’ brings this commitment one step higher with some
quantifiable goals for all our 100+ members. We
will also keep focusing on involving the local community through
various educational projects, both in-house and through partnerships.”
