Banyan Tree Global Foundation has renewed
its support of Ms Laurentia Tan, Singapore’s first Paralympic
medallist at the 2008 Beijing Paralympic Games, who is currently
training for and competing to qualify for the 2012 Summer
Paralympic Games in London.
The Corporate Social
Responsibility arm of Banyan Tree Holdings, started
sponsoring Ms Tan in early 2010 and renewed her funding this year.
The support helps cover costs of stabling and keeping Ms Tan’s
show horse Rubin, in support of her continued training.
In May this year, Ms Tan won two gold medals at a CPEDI 3*
(International) competition in Mannheim, Germany. Competing in the Individual Championships Test and Freestyle to Music, Ms Tan was
placed first in both events, finishing as a Grade 1A Winner.
Prior to that, on the international stage of the
October 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, Kentucky, she
finished fifth place in both the Individual Championships and the
Freestyle Music category.
Born in Singapore, Ms Tan
moved to the United Kingdom at the age of three in order to access
specialist treatment and educational support for cerebral palsy,
which left her with near complete deafness and limited her
mobility.
“For me, riding a horse gives me the
freedom; the movements and energy that my own legs cannot do! It
has helped my mobility, my co-ordination and given me the
confidence in myself,” Ms Tan said.
