Travel News Asia Latest Travel News Podcasts Videos Monday, 14 February 2011

SpiceRoads Cycle Tours is calling train and cycling enthusiasts to enjoy a steam train excursion from Bangkok to Ayutthaya followed by a bicycle tour around Ayutthaya Historical Park.

In honor of the first rail service to Ayutthaya on 26 March 1894, Thailand is rolling out two steam locomotives for a special trip from Bangkok to Ayutthaya on 26 March 2011.

The 1950s Japanese-built Pacific steam locomotives are only pulled from their home at the Thonburi depot four times a year.

The journey begins at 8 am from Hua Lampong train station in Bangkok to arrive in Ayutthaya at 10:10 am. Guests will then switch iron horses to start the easy bicycle ride through the towering chedis amidst crumbling ruins of the ancient city of Ayutthaya, a UNESCO World Heritage site since 1991.

From the impressive ruins of Ayutthaya guests will cycle to the grandiose Bang Pa-In summer palace of the kings on country roads along the Chao Phraya River.

The special day trip combines a sentimental steam train journey with the cultural heritage of Ayutthaya with a leisurely 25 km bicycle ride that is suitable for any riding level.

The tour costs THB 2,950 per person (25% discount for children 12-16 years old) and includes pick up and drop off at a Bangkok hotel or home, train ticket, lunch, mountain bike and helmet and a guided tour by bicycle of Ayutthaya.
