The Caribbean Hotel Deal of the Year Award
winners for 2009 were announced at the Caribbean Hotel & Resort
Investment Summit (CHRIS) in Miami. Hosted by BHN, the inaugural
CHRIS just concluded at the InterContinental Miami.
The Development of the Year Award was presented
to the Sheraton Puerto Rico Convention Center Hotel & Casino in
San Juan, Puerto Rico. A 503-room, full service convention hotel,
the Sheraton Puerto Rico Convention Center Hotel & Casino opened
in November 2009 and is the first major hotel development in San
Juan, Puerto Rico in the last decade. The convention hotel serves
as the main anchor to the newly-built Puerto Rico Convention
Center.
Along with the Sheraton Puerto Rico Convention
Center Hotel & Casino, nominees for the CHRIS Development of the
Year Award included the 132-room Banyan Tree Mayakoba in Playa del
Carmen, Mexico; and the 166-room Viceroy Anguilla Resort &
Residences in Anguilla, British West Indies.
The delegates of CHRIS voted for the winner from
among a short listed nominee pool which was selected by a
nominating committee of CHRIS sponsors and planning committee
members.
The Transaction Deal of the Year Award winner
was Sandals Emerald Bay, Great Exuma, The Bahamas. Emerald Bay is
the latest addition to Sandals “Luxury Included” brand and
includes 183 spacious oceanfront rooms, each with Butler service.
The one mile of crescent-shaped beach is ideal for the resort’s
luxury all-inclusive format.
CHRIS focuses on hotel and tourism investment
opportunities in the Caribbean and is being held annually in
Miami, the financial and transportation gateway to the Caribbean
region.
