[HD videos below] Chicken rice may not come from Singapore, but
the simple yet world-famous Hainanese dish could well be described
as a national favourite. Discussing where to buy the best chicken rice
in Singapore with a local, is akin to asking an Englishman where
to buy the best fish and chips, or an Italian the best pasta - it
is a debate that has no end.
Taste is relative, and what may appeal to
one person, could well fall short of culinary excellence to
another. There are so many factors involved, some may concentrate purely on
the food, while for others, price, decor, ambiance or the attitude of
staff may play a greater role collectively or individually.
There are those that do claim to offer the
best chicken rice, some have even gone so far as to unofficially
incorporate it into their name, but there is one gentleman located
opposite Novena Church in Singapore that makes no such claim. He,
despite feeding Singapore's hunger for chicken rice for over 22
years, is far too modest to place that label on himself, and yet
if there were a crown for the best chicken rice in Singapore, he
would undoubtedly be one of the main favourites for the title.
Mr. Wee Nam Kee, today at 72 years of age, knows
lot more than just a thing or two about making the best chicken
rice. Now, he has stepped back a little and his son, Junior, runs
the business. In the video interview below, we talk to Mr. Wee Nam
Kee about what makes his chicken rice so special, his business and his exciting
regional expansion plans that will soon kick off the Philippines
followed by Indonesia.
Is Wee Nam Kee the Chicken Rice King? Quite
possibly, and with his latest expansion plans well underway, his
empire is growing rapidly. So, whether you live in Singapore or
are just visiting, make sure you make at least one culinary stop
at what is a chicken rice legend in Singapore, you won't be
disappointed.
