Smiths Detection has signed an agreement with
Analogic to develop the next generation of high-speed Explosives
Detection Systems for screening checked airport baggage.
Under the agreement, both companies will
utilise their complementary expertise in multi-energy x-ray
technology and three-dimensional Computed Tomography (CT) to
develop a detection system to be manufactured by Smiths Detection.
Analogic will focus on the development of new high-precision CT
components to be incorporated into the system. The development
cost will be absorbed within Smiths Detections ongoing R&D spend
over the next two to three years.
The new scanner will
maximise both detection and throughput capabilities to help meet
increasingly stringent international security requirements and
allow easy integration into advanced baggage-handling systems.
Three-dimensional Computed Tomography (CT), originally
developed to aid medical diagnosis, builds a three-dimensional,
computerised image of the inside of an object from a large series
of x-ray images taken around a single axis of rotation.
