Hong Kong Disneyland launches Three New Tomorrowland Attractions

Travel News Asia Friday, 14 July 2006

Of Disneyland in California, company founder Walt Disney once said, “Disneyland will never be completed. It will continue to grow as long as there is imagination left in the world.”

Continuing that legacy at Hong Kong Disneyland, a trio of new Tomorrowland attractions – Stitch Encounter, Autopia and UFO Zone – was unveiled this week to members of the news media. The attractions, which officially opened to theme park guests July 13, debuted approximately 10 months after September 12, 2005 opening of the world-class family entertainment and recreation resort.

“We are pleased to kick off our first summer at Hong Kong Disneyland with such innovative and fun entertainment that caters to guests of all ages,” Bill Ernest, Executive Vice President and Managing Director of Hong Kong Disneyland Resort, told media in attendance. “There’s never been a better time to come and experience the magic of our park!”

The “new” Tomorrowland at Hong Kong Disneyland:

Stitch Encounter

First introduced to audiences in Walt Disney Pictures’ 2002 hit comedy “Lilo & Stitch,” the fuzzy, blue and lovable alien known officially as “Experiment 626” takes center stage in Stitch Encounter, a new Tomorrowland attraction featuring an intimate theater that allows guests to step into Stitch’s animated – and quite mischievous – world.

Utilizing the latest real time computer graphics animation technology created by Walt Disney Imagineering, the creative geniuses behind all Disney parks and resorts, Stitch Encounter opens new doors of possibilities for Hong Kong Disneyland guests – allowing them to talk, listen, joke and play in a way that only Disney can create.

Stitch Encounter gives Hong Kong Disneyland guests the chance to engage in real-time, spontaneous conversation with the animated, fluffy alien in a theater setting. From the bridge of his “borrowed” spaceship, Stitch chats, plays, jokes and even flirts with guests. Separate experiences are offered in Cantonese, English and Putonghua respectively.

The show is never the same twice – whether Stitch plays his guitar, dances around the bridge of his spaceship, takes digital photographs of audience members or encourages guests to roar like lions and screech like monkeys.

Because of the interactivity and immersion of the experience, Stitch Encounter is a show where the guests are just as much the “stars” of the production as Stitch himself.

Autopia, presented by Honda

Dubbed “the highway of Tomorrowland,” Autopia is a new driving attraction that features sleek, electric convertibles cruising along an out-of-this-world landscape.

No driver’s license is required on the highways and byways of the cosmic landscape; the road is open to anyone who meets the attraction’s minimum height requirement (137 cm tall to drive alone and 81 cm to ride).

Autopia-style attractions have long been a favorite of Disney theme parks guests dating back to July 17, 1955, when Disneyland in California opened. That day, Autopia started its engines and has been on a roll around the world ever since.

Since then, similar attractions have opened at Walt Disney World Resort in Florida, Tokyo Disneyland in Japan and Disneyland Paris in France. Hong Kong Disneyland carries on that tradition this summer with the opening of Autopia.

Presented by Honda, Autopia at Hong Kong Disneyland features three tracks with lushly landscaped grounds. Drivers begin their journey in the finely manicured byways known as the “cityscape” before crossing over the bridges and overpasses into the untamed “alien” landscape.

The planning and development of Autopia at Hong Kong Disneyland make it one of the most intricate Autopia-style attractions at any Disney theme park in the world. Walt Disney Imagineering, the creative geniuses behind all Disney parks and resorts, created a multi-sensory experience that combines driving fun with Disney’s famous attention to detail and family fun.

UFO Zone

An alien oasis in the heart of Tomorrowland, the UFO Zone (which stands for “Unbelievably Fun Objects”) delights Hong Kong Disneyland guests amidst a futuristic spaceport where keeping cool is the number one rule.

Splash-tastic fun and water-full good times are always on tap whether guests want to get soaked or just enjoy a little sprinkling to keep cool from the Hong Kong sun.

Waterfalls and brightly colored spaceships complete the UFO Zone where the water is always popping, squirting, spurting and splattering. Guests will find a noisy, water-spraying robot; water squirting ray guns, a crashed rocket ship; a flying saucer and an alien plant that unexpectedly wiggles water around every few minutes.

Bathed in bright colors, UFO Zone is an interactive, alien landscape replete with splash-tastic fun bursting from water pop jets, bubblers, misters, thrusters and quirky squirters. Outer space sound effects combine with water effects to provide even more H2O-hijinks.
