Sporting prowess was pushed to the limits
yesterday when the Miss World contestants competed in the first Miss World Continental Sports Event in Sheraton Sanya
Resort, “the home of Miss World 2005”.
Teams from each continental group tackled challenges in four sporting disciplines: Strength, Long Jump, Swimming Relay and Running Relay. The results were tallied
according to a points system and the winning team received commemorative medals.
All the teams came with their designated colors with the Caribbean Team having the most colorful outfits. Each team even came up with their own cheering squads
complete with pom-poms, banners and letter cut-outs.
Everyone in each team tried their best in representing their continents, be it through joining the sports event as a player or as a cheering squad member. In the end,
three teams bested all the others. The first place went to the Asia Pacific Team, second was the Caribbean Team and third was the Southern Europe Team.
The Strength Event was the first event of the day. This consisted of different exercises - sit ups, step-ups, burpees and star jumps. These had to be completed within a
specified time frame. Each exercise was according to a set technique demonstrated before the event.
The Long Jump was a team event, with each beauty contestant participating in the exercise having one jump. The contestants who jumped the furthest in that team
represented her continental group and went on to three more jumps. The longest jump counted towards the final team score.
The Swimming Relay saw each team member swimming one length of the pool in relay.
The winning team composed of those beauty contestants who completed the fastest four lengths of the pool.
Finally, the Running Relay featured each contestant participating in the Miss World Continental Sports Event running one lap and changing over to their team mate.
Once all four contestants from the team completed the laps, the clock was stopped and the quickest team went on to win the event.
The idea of the Miss World Continental Sports Event is for a team to score as many points as possible in the four events. These scores made up the final total and the
team with the most points at the end of the competition won.
“It was a demonstration of team spirit” stated Steven Morley of Miss World Organization during the awarding ceremony.
