According to the American Express “Hot Travel Rewards Survey” released today, one-third (33%) of respondents
from Hong Kong usually spend more than HK$30,000 per person on leisure travel each year, while another one-third spend an average of HK$10,000-20,000.
The survey, aimed to understand American Express Cardmembers’ travel behavior and interest, was conducted via the internet between May and June of this year and
responded by over 3,000 Cardmembers.
The survey findings also revealed that Japan is the most favorite travel destination among travelers in Hong Kong, as almost a quarter (22%) would like to visit Japan for
holiday in the next 12 months. Europe came second with 18%, followed by Thailand (14%). Almost half (49%) of the respondents travel on leisure once to twice a year,
while 33% travel three to four times a year.
Commenting on the results of the survey, Mr. Anthony Lee, Senior Vice President and Head of Greater China of American Express
said, “Travel related rewards offered in the American Express Membership Rewards Program are especially popular among our Cardmembers, as most of them are frequent travelers. The results of this
survey give us an insight into how best to tailor make our travel rewards to suit Cardmembers’ needs. With the introduction of the Membership Rewards Triple Plus
Program last year, customers can even earn points three times faster and redeem the travel rewards more easily. We will continue to explore new opportunities to
enhance the travel related rewards for our customers.”
The survey also showed that for those who have transferred credit card points to air mileages, 59% choose to redeem air tickets with their frequent flyer mileages,
followed by hotel or holiday package (18%) and class upgrade (15%). When asked about the most preferred method of traveling, travel packages scored highest (74%)
while guided tours came second with a score of 16% among respondents.
